Michael Hage’s decision to stay at Michigan for another season is starting to look like it could pay off for both him and the Montreal Canadiens.
RG.org’s Marco D’Amico recently caught up with Michigan coach Brandon Naurato, and the message from the Wolverines bench was pretty clear: the plan is to push Hage as close to NHL-ready as possible before he makes the leap.
Naurato didn’t sugarcoat the goal for this year. He said the staff wants Hage prepared to help right away in Montreal, adding, "We want him to be an impactful player for the Montreal Canadiens at the end of the season.”
That kind of expectation makes sense considering how many Canadiens fans already see Hage as a potential second-line center. He’s become one of the organization’s most talked-about prospects, and his story has only added to the buzz. But once he gets to the NHL, the warm feelings won’t shield him from the pressure that comes with playing in Montreal.
That’s why this extra year matters. Hage could have turned pro, but another season in the NCAA gives him a chance to keep building his game in a bigger role, with more responsibility and more trust in key situations.
Naurato said the staff views him as a leader, and that he’s being leaned on for major minutes. That kind of workload can do a lot for a young center.
There’s also the defensive side of the equation. Naurato noted that once Hage earns it, he’ll be given penalty-killing time.
That could end up being especially important for Montreal if Phillip Danault isn’t around long term. Danault’s contract expires at the end of the season, and if the Canadiens don’t re-sign the 33-year-old soon-to-be 34-year-old, they could be staring at a real hole in the penalty kill.
If Hage can eventually handle that job, it would take a major burden off Derek Lalonde’s side. And if Michigan gets its way, he’ll arrive in Montreal ready for exactly that kind of responsibility.
