Kirby Dach’s contract situation with the Canadiens has taken a sharp turn, and the reason he still hasn’t signed his qualifying offer is now a lot clearer.
The offer Montreal submitted was a two-way deal, according to Marco D’Amico, citing information from Eric Engels. That changes the picture entirely.
“Confirmation from Eric now that Dach had received a 2-way Qualifying Offer.
Hence why Dach hasn't signed it.”
A two-way contract means the salary changes depending on whether the player is in the NHL or the AHL. For a player who was taken third overall, that kind of offer sends a strong message about where things stand.
It also gives Montreal a built-in out. The Canadiens appear to be leaving the door open to move on from their forward, and that’s not exactly a great sign for his standing in the organization.
Nicolas Cloutier pointed out the practical side of it, too. If Dach is sent down, he has to clear waivers first.
“And if I'm not mistaken, the equivalent of $1.225 million can be removed from the Canadiens' salary cap if Dach is assigned to Laval.”
So if Montreal does send him to Laval, the club would free up cap space based on the qualifying offer it handed out. The catch, of course, is that another team could simply claim him on waivers and take him for nothing.
Given the situation, that may not be seen as a major loss.
Dach’s stock hasn’t helped itself either. He’s coming off a 15-point season in 37 games, another underwhelming year that only adds to the pressure around his future in Montreal.

Canadiens Honor Marc Messier With Heartfelt Tribute After His Passing
The Canadiens joined the hockey world in mourning after the passing of actor Marc Messier, issuing an official statement to offer condolences to his family and friends. For generations of fans in Quebec, Messier was more than a familiar face on screen, and the club pointed to the way his work helped connect hockey, entertainment and local identity in a way few performers ever managed.
The NHL also extended its sympathy, underscoring how widely Messier was respected beyond the province and beyond the television set. His name will always be tied to hockey culture in Quebec, and the reaction from Montreal reflected just how much his presence meant to people who grew up with those stories and the game they celebrated. Canadiens Fans May See Demidovs Deal Very Differently Now
Ivan Demidovs contract with the Canadiens finally came together after six months of negotiations, and the early reaction around the deal has been easy to predict: some analysts are already treating it like a bargain for Montreal. But the picture looks a little different from the players side, where the focus is less on whether the price was right and more on the fact that Demidov is now in place and ready to keep building with the organization.
Agent Dan Milstein has pushed back on the idea that the Canadiens somehow got away with a steal, making it clear Demidov is satisfied with the agreement and appreciates the long-term security it gives him. After a rookie season that showed why the hype followed him so quickly, the more interesting part now is how the organization and its newest young cornerstone view the deal as a foundation, not just a headline.
