Habs Stun Leafs as Secondary Scoring Shines Without Caufield's Expected Injury

Despite the absence of star forward Cole Caufield, the Montreal Canadiens relied on strong secondary scoring to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs, raising hopes for sustained success against upcoming opponents.

Last night, the Montreal Canadiens faced a moment of concern when Cole Caufield was seen doubled over on the bench. Initially feared to be an injury, it was later confirmed by Martin St-Louis that Caufield was simply dealing with an illness.

While this was a relief, it did require some strategic adjustments on the fly. Despite the challenge, the Canadiens held their ground and secured a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With their top scorer not at full capacity, it was time for others to shine, and Oliver Kapanen rose to the occasion. Kapanen, assisted by Ivan Demidov and Alex Newhook, scored his 20th goal of the season, showcasing speed and anticipation that kept him a step ahead of the Leafs throughout the game. Demidov, even while double-shifted, was instrumental in keeping the energy high and the plays sharp.

Adding to the scoreboard were Jake Evans and Phillip Danault, whose contributions were crucial in overcoming the solid performance of Toronto’s goaltender, Joseph Woll. Evans, in particular, was a constant threat and could have added more to his tally if not for Woll’s efforts. The secondary scoring was a refreshing sight, stepping up when the top line needed support.

The top line, featuring Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovksy, also delivered strong performances. Suzuki was in fine form, and Slafkovksy was relentless on the ice.

Even Caufield, before reducing his shifts, showed promising numbers. While the Leafs are currently struggling, seeing the Canadiens’ depth players rise to the occasion was encouraging.

Looking ahead, Caufield is expected to travel with the team to Ottawa, though it remains uncertain if he will play his usual minutes. Fortunately, the team will have two days to rest before returning to the Bell Centre. As they prepare to face the Ottawa Senators, who have been a challenging opponent this season, the Canadiens will hope for continued contributions from their secondary scorers.
