In a spirited showdown at the Bell Centre, the Canadiens faced a 4-2 defeat against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for Montreal fans, especially with the return of Cole Caufield.
Caufield, who missed Wednesday’s game due to illness, came back with a bang, reaching a personal milestone of 38 goals for the 2025-2026 season. This achievement ties him with Minnesota's Kirill Kaprizov for second place in the NHL scoring race, trailing only Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon. At 25, Caufield is proving to be a formidable force on the ice.
Adding to his impressive stats, Caufield netted his 16th goal on a Saturday this season. This feat hasn't been matched since Brian Bellows scored 16 goals in 24 Saturday games during the 1992-1993 season. The last Canadiens player to surpass this was Stéphane Richer, with 24 goals in 23 Saturday games back in 1989-1990.
Head coach Martin St-Louis made some strategic adjustments to the lineup, including slotting Alexandre Texier into the fourth line, which meant Brendan Gallagher sat this one out. Between the pipes, Jakub Dobes made 17 saves for Montreal, showcasing his skills despite the outcome.
While the game didn’t end in Montreal’s favor, Caufield’s performance and the lineup tweaks offer a glimpse into the team’s potential moving forward.
