Cole Caufield has a strong case to be included when NHL Network unveils its Top 20 Wings Right Now list on Sunday night at 7:00 PM.
The Montreal Canadiens winger put together a season that stacks up with the best in the league, especially when you narrow the view to right wings. Caufield finished with 88 points, which ranked third among all right wingers behind Nikita Kucherov’s 130 and David Pastrnak’s 100. Expand that out to all wingers, and he still landed sixth, with Jason Robertson at 96, Kyle Connor at 92 and Kirill Kaprizov at 89 finishing ahead of him.
His biggest calling card was goals. Caufield scored 51 times, more than any other winger, and no one at his position was close.
Kucherov was next among right wings with 44, while Kaprizov led left wings with 45. Only one forward scored more overall: Nathan MacKinnon, who had 53 goals, including eight empty-net goals.
Kucherov, for his part, had seven empty-netters among his total.
Caufield also finished tied for fourth among wingers in plus-minus at plus-29. Only Kucherov, at plus-44, Brandon Hagel at plus-34 and Artturi Lehkonen at plus-32 were ahead of him.
The numbers make the argument pretty straightforward. Even though Caufield didn’t fit the size profile Team USA was looking for in the 4 Nations Face-Off and the Olympics, his production was hard to ignore. He remains a constant power-play threat, has a habit of delivering game-tying and game-winning goals for the Canadiens, and has shown a real knack for coming through when Montreal needs a goal in the regular season.
He’s also one of the league’s better values, carrying a $7.85 million cap hit. Statistically, the case is there for Caufield to land on the list. The only question is where NHL Network places him.

The unsigned unrestricted free agent has spent 15 seasons in the NHL, built a reputation as a reliable secondary scorer, and even owns a Stanley Cup ring, which gives him the kind of resume that can appeal to a team trying to stabilize its depth without blocking younger players.
For Montreal, the appeal is obvious: a player like Smith could step into a professional tryout and show whether there is still enough left in the tank to help the bottom six contribute more consistently.
