The Montreal Canadiens are heading into the trade deadline with a real opportunity to bolster their roster for a playoff push. Sitting fourth in the Atlantic Division with 67 points, they’re very much in the hunt - and a smart addition or two could give them the edge they need to solidify their postseason spot.
But while the temptation to swing big is understandable, there’s one name that should be completely off the table: Michael Hage.
Hage, Montreal’s first-round pick in 2024, is showing all the signs of becoming a difference-maker at the NHL level - and soon. His performance at the World Juniors turned heads, tallying two goals and 13 assists in just seven games for Team Canada.
That kind of production on an international stage doesn’t just happen by accident. It’s the mark of a player with elite vision, poise, and playmaking instincts.
Currently skating for the University of Michigan, Hage is putting together an impressive season in the NCAA ranks, with 12 goals and 23 assists. That’s a strong showing in one of the toughest developmental leagues in the world, and it only reinforces the idea that he’s on a fast track to the NHL.
Yes, the Canadiens could use another NHL-ready center - that’s not in question. But Hage might be just a season or two away from filling that role himself.
Trading him now, especially when the market doesn’t offer many clear-cut upgrades at the position, would be short-sighted. Montreal has other assets they could leverage if they’re looking to make a splash - including fellow top prospect David Reinbacher - but Hage should be considered untouchable.
The Habs are in a good spot. They’ve built a promising young core and are starting to see that potential translate into results.
But staying patient with players like Hage could be the difference between a quick fix and long-term success. If Montreal plays this deadline right, they can improve their roster without sacrificing a player who might be a foundational piece for years to come.
