Kent Hughes has never been shy about swinging for the fences, but the Canadiens’ general manager has also made it clear what kind of player he wants: someone who fits the team’s timeline, not a short-term fix. That approach is why Montreal keeps getting linked to younger talent, and if Hughes starts working the phones before training camp or once the season gets rolling, three names stand out.
Shane Wright is the one that still carries a little extra sting in Montreal because of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, when the Canadiens passed on him with the first overall pick. Four years later, though, the idea of landing him in a trade feels a lot more realistic than it once did.
The 22-year-old centre put up 44 points in 79 games in 2024-25 and kept building his reputation as a dependable two-way player. The scoring line is solid rather than flashy, but Wright’s value goes well beyond the box score. He’s shown he can handle tough defensive work and still chip in offensively, which is exactly the kind of profile that tends to age well.
That’s what makes him so appealing for Montreal. Wright could fill a long-term hole down the middle as a middle-six centre, and his ceiling still points toward a quality second-line role who can play in all situations.
Even if he never gets there, the floor is strong: a third-line centre who can kill penalties, win faceoffs and go head-to-head with strong opposition. At 22, that’s a rare package.
He would also slide neatly into the Canadiens’ young core and give Martin St. Louis another smart, responsible centre to work with.
He is reportedly available, and Montreal should at least check the price.
Connor Zary brings a different kind of appeal. The 24-year-old has flashed top-six ability at times, with skill, vision and offensive instincts that have never really been in question. The issue has been consistency, which is often where a fresh start can matter.
Montreal has already seen how a bigger opportunity can help a young player settle in, with Alex Newhook serving as one example. Zary could be next in that line.
What makes him especially useful is his versatility. He can line up at centre or on the wing, giving St.
Louis more options when building out the lineup. He also fits right into the age range of Montreal’s core, alongside Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, Ivan Demidov and Zachary Bolduc.
If the Calgary Flames are open to listening, Hughes should be on the phone.
Then there’s Owen Tippett, the name on this list that would probably light up Canadiens fans the fastest. The Philadelphia Flyers winger has grown into one of the league’s most dangerous power forwards when he’s rolling.
He brings elite skating, a heavy shot and a physical edge that makes him a nightmare to defend. He can create offense on his own and still bring a hard-nosed presence every night.
Philadelphia has a wave of young wingers coming, including Porter Martone and Tyson Foerster. If those players keep establishing themselves as core pieces, it’s fair to wonder whether the Flyers might eventually consider moving Tippett to address another need. It’s not a sure thing, but it’s not hard to see the logic.
For Montreal, the fit is obvious. The Canadiens have been looking for another top-six forward who adds size and physicality, and Tippett checks those boxes.
Put him next to a playmaker like Demidov or Suzuki and the matchup problems start in a hurry. His speed would open ice, and his finishing ability would give Montreal another real scoring threat.
None of these players is guaranteed to become available. Still, all three match the Canadiens’ age curve, fill real organizational needs and have more room to grow. If Hughes decides to make another meaningful move, Shane Wright, Connor Zary and Owen Tippett belong near the top of Montreal’s trade board.

The Canadiens are still waiting on Martin St-Louis to put pen to paper on the contract extension many around the team expected to be a formality by mid-July. It is a little out of step with how Montreal has handled coaching business in the past, especially after the club moved quickly on extensions in 2022 and 2024, but there has been no official sign of trouble as the front office and head coach keep carrying on as usual.
Even so, the longer the decision lingers, the more natural it is for outside speculation to creep in about where things stand.
