Canadiens Suddenly Have A Bigger Samuel Montembeault Decision Than Expected

As the Canadiens deliberate over the potential trade of goaltender Samuel Montembeault, expert insights suggest Montreal could leverage rising interest for a strategic gain beyond mere draft picks.

Samuel Montembeault’s name is already out there, and the Canadiens don’t sound in any hurry to slam the door shut on trade talks.

Darren Dreger said teams have checked in on the 30-year-old goaltender, and the real question for Montreal is what kind of return would make sense. The Canadiens, he suggested, shouldn’t move Montembeault for a simple draft pick. If he’s going anywhere, it would likely need to be part of a larger package that brings real help back to Montreal.

That’s where Kent Hughes comes in. Dreger believes the Canadiens general manager would be willing to listen if a deal includes more than just Montembeault alone, possibly a forward and another piece.

In other words, this isn’t about selling low on a goalie who’s unavailable right now. It’s about whether his value can be folded into something bigger.

Montembeault hasn’t played this season and is still on injured reserve, with November 5 listed as his earliest possible return date. His absence has already created a numbers issue in net. Renaud Lavoie reported on October 25 that Montreal would have to sort out a three-goalie situation.

There’s also the contract angle. Montembeault is in the final year of his deal and carries a cap hit of just over $3 million, which means any team calling has to think beyond this season. That part matters, because the Canadiens don’t appear to be under any pressure to rush into a move.

The standings give them that freedom. Montreal is 9-3-2, fifth in the NHL and second in the Atlantic Division. The club has won five straight, capped by Saturday’s 5-4 win over Pittsburgh, and that kind of run gives Hughes room to wait for the right offer instead of settling for the first one that comes along.

The Canadiens host Winnipeg tonight, while Montembeault’s future remains unsettled as his return gets closer.

Dreger laid out the thinking in a clip shared Friday by RinkyReport:

"I know that there have been teams that have called on Sam Montembeault. [...]

Is it early to give up Sam Montembeault via trade? I guess it depends on what you're getting back.

You know, is it a package that is maybe something more significant where you get a forward and something else and Montembeault just happens to be along for the ride as part of that deal? I think that's where Kent Hughes would enter into, I'm willing to listen on absolutely everything.

But the market for Sam Montembeault is only going to get better."

If that market keeps moving up, Hughes can afford to wait and let it keep climbing.

Canadiens Game Just Took A Turn After Key Utah Blue-Liner Exit

The game against Utah took an abrupt turn when the Mammoth lost veteran defenseman Nate Schmidt in the second period. Schmidt, who brings plenty of NHL experience to the blue line, was ruled out with an upper-body injury, leaving Utah to finish the night without one of its more established defenders.

For Montreal, it changes the look of the matchup in a hurry, especially with a seasoned blueliner suddenly out of the picture. Utah did not offer any further detail on when Schmidt was hurt or how serious the issue might be, so the full impact of the exit remains unclear as the game unfolds. [Read more 🡒]

Canadiens Fans Have Every Reason To Watch Ottawa's Laine Push

Patrik Laines name has lingered in the rumor mill for months, and now theres another reason for Montreal fans to keep one eye on Ottawa. The winger remains unsigned, but reports that he was seen at Ottawas airport have only added fuel to the speculation that the Senators could still be in the mix for a player whose finishing touch would be hard to ignore.

Senators general manager Steve Staios reportedly explored signing Laine over the offseason, which makes the fit easy to understand from Ottawas side. The power-play need is obvious, and Laines scoring ability would give the Senators a different look if they decide to keep pushing on this front, even if there has been no official confirmation about his status or the purpose of the trip. Canadiens Linked To Defenseman Who Could Reshape Their Blue Line

The Canadiens blue line has been a talking point all season, and now a new name has entered the conversation. Simon Edvinsson, the Detroit Red Wings defenseman who remains unsigned, has drawn interest around the league, and reports from The Fourth Period have linked Montreal to the situation as teams continue to monitor what could become one of the more intriguing defensive storylines on the market.

For Montreal, the appeal is obvious. The club has been assessing its current defensive roster with an eye toward both immediate stability and longer-term upside, and Edvinssons profile makes him a natural fit to at least consider. Nothing has been finalized, and no trade has been confirmed, but the Canadiens are clearly among the teams watching closely as this develops. [Read more 🡒]
