The Laval Rocket have made a new addition to their bench, and the Montreal Canadiens organization has now made it official: David Urquhart is joining the AHL club as an assistant coach.
Urquhart, 41, comes to Laval after serving as head coach of the McGill University Redbirds since May 2021. The Rocket confirmed the move with a brief announcement, saying, "The Laval Rocket announced today the appointment of David Urquhart as an assistant coach."
This is a familiar league for Urquhart. He already has AHL coaching experience, having worked as an assistant with the San Diego Gulls, the Anaheim Ducks' affiliate, from 2018-19 through 2020-21. His coaching background also includes four seasons as an assistant at McGill, plus a stint behind the bench with Serbia at the 2018 Division II World Championship.
His playing career brought its own layer of experience. A Thorold, Ontario native, Urquhart was captain at McGill before moving on to the pro game.
He appeared in 130 AHL games with the Hamilton Bulldogs and Hartford Wolf Pack, finishing with 23 points. After that, he wrapped up his career in Italy, where he played three seasons.
For Montreal, the hire fits the bigger picture. Laval is the place where a number of the organization’s top prospects keep developing, so adding someone with Urquhart’s mix of AHL, college, and international experience gives the Rocket another voice in that process.
With the move now official, Laval has another experienced coach in the fold as the Canadiens continue shaping the next wave of talent.
