The Montreal Canadiens have built such a deep prospect pipeline that even a player with real upside can slip into the background. Aatos Koivu is one of those names.
While attention naturally goes to Michael Hage, Alexander Zharovsky and David Reinbacher because of how quickly they could matter to the NHL club, other prospects such as L.J. Mooney, Bryce Pickford and Koivu don’t always get the same spotlight. Yet there is still clear interest in Koivu from management, and Grant McCagg made it a point to bring him back into focus on his latest “HabsCast.”
McCagg’s view is that Koivu gets overlooked too often. He described the Finnish forward as a strong skater who can score in a variety of ways and bring a solid two-way game.
That evaluation comes with a bold ceiling attached. McCagg went so far as to say Koivu has top-six potential, even if he remains a long way from reaching the NHL.
For now, his game is closer in style to Owen Beck or Oliver Kapanen, players more often tied to depth roles than to one of the top two lines. That makes this season in Liiga an important one for him, especially if he can secure a second-line job and get time on special teams.
That kind of step would count as meaningful progress, and it’s the type of development worth tracking closely.
Koivu’s profile also says plenty about the Canadiens’ system as a whole: when a 20-year-old centre with legitimate debate around his ceiling can still feel like an afterthought, the organization’s prospect pool is doing a lot right. Koivu, who stands 6-foot and 171 pounds, was selected by Montreal in the third round of the 2024 NHL Draft, 70th overall.
