The Montreal Canadiens may have a real trade piece on their hands in Adam Engstrom.
According to Arpon Basu of The Athletic, the young defenseman’s name has come up often in conversations around the league, and Montreal is not shutting down the possibility of moving him. Teams have checked in, talks have happened, and the Canadiens are willing to listen if the return makes sense.

Kent Hughes has been working toward a bigger objective for months: landing an impact forward and an established defenseman, ideally a right-shot blueliner. If he finally pulls off that kind of move, Engstrom could be one of the names heading out the door.
A deal for a player such as Matthew Knies, Kirill Marchenko or another target could force Montreal to part with real future value, and Engstrom fits that bill. At 22, he remains one of the organization’s top defensive prospects and a tempting chip in the kind of trade that could accelerate the Canadiens’ timeline.
That kind of move would not come without a cost, especially with a player like Arber Xhekaj already in the mix. Still, if the right partner shows up, Engstrom could be on the move before training camp.
