The Montreal Canadiens may have a real trade piece on their hands in Adam Engstrom.
According to Arpon Basu of The Athletic, the young defenseman’s name has come up often in conversations around the league, and Montreal is not shutting down the possibility of moving him. Teams have checked in, talks have happened, and the Canadiens are willing to listen if the return makes sense.
“It is no secret Adam Engstrom's name is floating around out there. Teams have asked about him; the Canadiens are open to those discussions.”
- Arpon Basu
That doesn’t mean Montreal is eager to move him for just anything. The word from Basu is that Engstrom is available, but only for the right deal.
And the logic is easy to follow. The Canadiens already have seven defensemen under contract, and David Reinbacher is pushing his way into the picture. That makes Engstrom one of the more movable pieces on the blue line.
Kent Hughes has been working toward a bigger objective for months: landing an impact forward and an established defenseman, ideally a right-shot blueliner. If he finally pulls off that kind of move, Engstrom could be one of the names heading out the door.
A deal for a player such as Matthew Knies, Kirill Marchenko or another target could force Montreal to part with real future value, and Engstrom fits that bill. At 22, he remains one of the organization’s top defensive prospects and a tempting chip in the kind of trade that could accelerate the Canadiens’ timeline.
That kind of move would not come without a cost, especially with a player like Arber Xhekaj already in the mix. Still, if the right partner shows up, Engstrom could be on the move before training camp. He remains a prospect with a legitimate NHL future, but he also looks like the type of asset Montreal is prepared to use if the payoff is big enough.

Arber Xhekaj Just Put One Canadiens Decision Under The Microscope
Arber Xhekajs place in the Canadiens lineup has become one of those quiet roster questions that can carry real salary-cap weight. An analyst recently argued that Montreal should think of him as a sixth or seventh defenseman, a player whose appeal comes from his physical edge and willingness to make life uncomfortable for opponents, but not one whose role automatically warrants a major raise.
The debate gets sharper because Xhekajs contract situation is still unresolved, and his usage is part of the conversation. If he remains in that limited role, the market for him may not climb as high as some would expect, which puts Montreal in an interesting spot as it weighs toughness, ice time and future value on the blue line. Canadiens May Finally Have A Real Montembeault Trade Opening
The goalie market in Columbus just got a lot more interesting, and Montreal has to be paying attention. With Elvis Merzlikins sidelined after shoulder surgery, the Blue Jackets are suddenly looking at a situation where Jet Greaves is carrying the load and Pheonix Copley is at least part of the conversation if more help is needed. For a Canadiens front office that has long had to weigh what to do with Samuel Montembeault, that kind of opening is the sort of development that can change the temperature around a potential deal.
Montembeault is also in the final year of his contract, which adds to the intrigue around his future. After a rough statistical season, he still profiles as the type of goalie a team in Columbus's position could examine if it wants stability or insurance, and Montreal would have to at least consider whether this is the right moment to explore value. No trade has been confirmed, but the fit is obvious enough that this is now one of those situations worth watching closely. [Read more 🡒]
Samuel Montembeaults Trade Market Just Got More Interesting
Samuel Montembeaults name has been floating through plenty of trade talk, but he remains with the Canadiens for now as the market around him keeps shifting. One of the more notable developments came in Columbus, where the Blue Jackets added another wrinkle to their goaltending picture and, by extension, to any conversation about teams looking for help in net.
For Montembeault, the timing matters. He has not been dealt despite the speculation, and situations like this can change the way clubs value available goalies, especially when a roster suddenly needs a steadier option. Even without a move yet, the window for Montembeault to carve out a firmer NHL foothold may be getting a little more interesting. [Read more 🡒]
