An unexpected shoulder surgery in Columbus may have opened the door for the Canadiens to finally find a cleaner path forward in goal.
The Blue Jackets announced Thursday that backup goalie Elvis Merzlikins recently underwent shoulder surgery, and they did not offer a timetable for his return. That matters because Columbus already has Jet Greaves in place as the clear starter after an excellent season, and Merzlikins was supposed to handle the backup role. If he ends up missing any portion of the regular season, the fallback option is Pheonix Copley - and that’s where Samuel Montembeault starts to look like a fit.
Montreal has been patient with Montembeault all summer, even with Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler in the organization and looking like the future. The Canadiens could have moved on from him already, but they have clearly tried to avoid dealing him for pennies. That patience may now have some value.
The problem for Montreal is that the return on Montembeault still isn’t likely to be huge. He is in the final year of his contract, and last season was one of the roughest of his career. He opened the year as the starter, lost the job to Dobes, and finished with a .873 save percentage and a 3.43 goals against average.
Even if he stays in Montreal as a backup, it’s hard to see him rebuilding much trade value there. That’s why Kent Hughes probably shouldn’t wait around expecting a massive haul. The best outcome for the Canadiens may simply be clearing a path for Jacob Fowler.
For Columbus, the logic is straightforward. If Merzlikins is out for any meaningful stretch, Montembeault gives the Blue Jackets a veteran option behind Greaves to open the season. It would also give Montembeault a chance to work his way back into value before he reaches free agency next summer.
The comparison between the two goalies is at least part of what makes this interesting. Merzlikins posted slightly better numbers than Montembeault last season, but over the three seasons before that, Montembeault was the steadier performer, finishing each year with a save percentage above .900. Merzlikins’ best mark in that span was .897.
None of this becomes real until Columbus knows how long Merzlikins will be sidelined. That timeline will decide whether the Blue Jackets go hunting for depth in goal. If the absence turns out to be significant, Samuel Montembeault would make a lot of sense.
And from Montreal’s side, a deal now could still bring more than a summer trade would have, while also giving Fowler a chance to start the season in the NHL.
