Canadiens May Be Getting Boxed Out Of Dylan Larkin Sweepstakes

Dylan Larkin's potential trade opportunities narrow as the Detroit star maintains his list of preferred teams amid ongoing talks and suspension drama.

Dylan Larkin’s trade wish list still doesn’t include Montreal, and that hasn’t changed even with the Red Wings’ latest suspension drama hanging over the situation.

Pierre LeBrun says Larkin has not added any teams to his list of 10 preferred destinations, and the Canadiens are still not on it. For now, his group remains the Hurricanes, Devils, Wild, Capitals, Panthers, Golden Knights, Lightning, Stars, Mammoth, and Avalanche. No Canadian team is included.

That leaves Montreal on the outside looking in, at least at this stage. The sense around the situation is that more teams could be added soon after the suspension announced by the Red Wings, with pressure continuing to build, but LeBrun’s update makes one thing plain: Larkin still hasn’t expanded the list.

Larkin, 30, has six points in 10 games with a +3 rating and an $8.7 million cap hit. The Red Wings managed a 4-1 win over Chicago without him.

Detroit’s general manager is already talking with several teams, including some that are not on Larkin’s list, and it’s fair to assume the Canadiens are among the clubs in the mix. Kris Draper has been at several Canadiens games, and Marco D’Amico has described him as the wild card in all of this.

Still, Larkin’s stance sends a clear signal. He has chosen to stop playing to force the issue and will be suspended without pay indefinitely, while keeping the same preferred destinations in place.

Detroit, now 6-4-3, is moving on without him. Montreal, sitting at 8-3-2, may have to look elsewhere if Larkin winds up going to another U.S. team instead.

The market for centers is thin, which is why names like Ryan O’Reilly, who has 14 points in 13 games with Nashville, and Mark Scheifele are being kicked around as alternatives. But Michael Hage is not available and has to stay off the table in any deal talk.

A late twist is still possible, as Chris Johnston suggested. For the moment, though, Montreal remains outside the circle.

Canadiens Still Waiting On Clarity In Demidov Suzuki Injury Situation

The Canadiens have navigated the early stretch of their season without three key injured players, and the latest update suggests at least one of those absences may soon be nearing an end. Marc-Olivier Beaudoin reported that Ivan Demidov is expected back soon, with several sources pointing to Nov. 3 as the latest target, while Montreal has quietly kept winning anyway, stacking three straight victories without him, Samuel Montembeault or Nick Suzuki in the lineup.

Montembeaults situation remains a little murkier, even after he skated Tuesday in Brossard, because the club still has not issued an official update after his original return window came and went. Suzuki is in a similar holding pattern, with no fresh status from the team as Montreal waits for clarity and may have more to say after its next game. [Read more 🡒]

Canadiens Suddenly Have A Rare Shot At The Star They Need

A rare opening has suddenly appeared for a player the Canadiens have had eyes on before, and it comes at a time when Montreal is still looking for the kind of elite talent that can change the shape of a lineup. Nikita Kucherov is in the final season of his deal with Tampa Bay, and his situation has quickly become one of the most intriguing in the league because of what it could mean for a contender trying to get in front of the market.

For Montreal, the appeal is obvious: this is the kind of star who could fit the long-term picture if the opportunity ever truly materializes. The catch is that plenty still has to break the Canadiens way, from whether Tampa actually moves him to whether Montreal is even in position to pursue him, so for now the front office can only watch closely and wait for the next shoe to drop. Canadiens Just Got Pulled Into A Dylan Larkin Roster Watch

The Canadiens have found themselves part of an unexpected trade conversation around Dylan Larkin, with Montreal reportedly showing off young talent in discussions involving the Detroit Red Wings center. It is the kind of background noise that follows a player of Larkins stature, and in Montreals case it points to a front office willing to dangle prospects and draft picks if the right opening appears.

There is still a long way to go before anything real can come together, though, because Larkin has not yet given Montreal his approval as a destination. Detroits suspension of the situation has only added another layer to the uncertainty, and while Larkin has made it clear he wants his status settled, the Canadiens are still waiting to see whether the talks can get any traction.
