The Canadiens used their golf tournament to make their first real news of the season, and the headline was a big one: Josh Anderson is officially an alternate captain.
The announcement came Monday morning at Laval-sur-le-Lac Golf Club, where the organization gathered the media and had Geoff Molson, Jeff Gorton, Kent Hughes and Martin St-Louis on hand, among others. With the move, No. 17 steps into the leadership group and fills the opening left by Brendan Gallagher’s departure to the Vancouver Canucks during the offseason.
Anderson will now join Mike Matheson alongside captain Nick Suzuki.
It’s a choice that runs against some of the recent speculation around the club, including Aaron Ward’s suggestion that Alex Newhook could have been the one to get the nod. Instead, Montreal made its feelings clear about Anderson’s place in the room.
The message is obvious: the Canadiens value what the 32-year-old brings inside the locker room. Jeff Gorton was even caught on camera during "The Rebuild," on Crave, saying the club would never trade Anderson. His physical edge has long been part of his appeal, and Gorton has viewed that kind of presence as important since his time in New York.
That same line of thinking also helps explain the acquisition of Chris Kreider, apparently.
On the ice, Anderson finished the most recent regular season with 23 points in 72 games, including 14 goals. His playoff production ticked up in the spring, when he posted seven points in 19 games and brought a noticeable physical presence.
Anderson is signed through the 2027 summer, when he’ll become eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of a seven-year contract worth $38.5 million.
The event also gave the Canadiens a chance to introduce Derek Lalonde, the new associate coach, who was on site and spoke with reporters.
