Canadiens Interest In Dylan Larkin Comes Down To One Big Thing

Dylan Larkin's potential trade from the Detroit Red Wings is heating up, but the star forward's destination remains uncertain amidst swirling speculation and salary cap challenges.

The Detroit Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin situation is still alive, but it isn’t moving fast.

Larkin, 30, has not pulled back his trade request and still wants to be dealt this season. He has a full no-movement clause, but he is believed to be willing to consider about 10 teams. The catch is simple: every one of those clubs is working with very little cap space, which makes any deal tough to line up right now.

Seven teams are known to be on the list Larkin would approve: the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals. The Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins are also being speculated as possibilities.

He has produced a goal and an assist in three games this season for Detroit, and he remains in the fourth season of an eight-year, $69.6 million contract.

One of the more intriguing wrinkles in all of this is Montreal. The Canadiens have shown serious interest in Larkin, but the veteran center is not yet open to the idea of going there. Still, the topic was impossible to miss on Saturday night in Montreal, where Red Wings-Canadiens fans inside the Bell Centre chanted “We Want Larkin” during the first period.

After the game, Larkin addressed it this way: “It was interesting,” Larkin told reporters after the game. “I never would have imagined that in this building and in my career.

They are passionate fans. It’s, in my opinion, the best atmosphere in hockey.”

TFP’s David Pagnotta, who had reported on the Canadiens’ interest multiple times last week and over the weekend, said Montreal has made its stance known to Detroit. The message, he said, is that if Larkin changes his mind and becomes open to Montreal, the Canadiens will respond with a substantial offer to try to get the Red Wings to move him.

“They’re waiting and if he changes his position and becomes open to it, the Habs will jump at the opportunity,” Pagnotta said on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio on Monday.

For now, the Wild are believed to be Larkin’s preferred landing spot. But as this drags on, there’s at least a chance he becomes more open to other teams, including the Canadiens.

Canadiens Blue Line Suddenly Puts David Reinbacher In Focus

A thinning blue line has suddenly pushed David Reinbacher into the conversation in Montreal. The Canadiens recalled the young defenseman from the Laval Rocket after Mike Matheson went down injured, leaving the club with only six healthy blueliners as it gets ready for a matchup with the Washington Capitals.

Reinbachers arrival adds intrigue to a situation the Canadiens did not have much time to manage, but his actual role is still unsettled. Montreal has not yet confirmed whether he will make his debut against Washington or where he would slot in if he does, which leaves the club balancing immediate need with a more cautious look at how it wants to deploy him. Canadiens May Be Fixing The Problem That Hurt Them Most

After a shaky start to the season in one of the areas that had hurt them most, the Canadiens are at least showing signs of a fix on the penalty kill. Against Buffalo, Montreal protected a 3-1 lead long enough to survive a Sabres push and eventually win in a shootout, but the more encouraging part came when the game turned chippy and special teams became a factor.

Montreals penalty killers handled every Buffalo man advantage in the game, and the recent trend now matters as much as the result itself. The Canadiens have strung together a run of successful kills over their last two games, a welcome answer after early-season trouble with power-play goals against had put extra pressure on the rest of the roster. Ivan Demidov Now Faces An Off Ice Problem Canadiens Fans Didn't Expect

Ivan Demidovs off-ice adjustment in Montreal has taken an unexpectedly awkward turn, with the Canadiens forward now dealing with a pair of speeding violations while operating on a probationary license. The situation is delicate because the license comes with very limited room for error, and a second infraction has put his driving status in jeopardy as the legal process plays out.

A lawyer has already filed a motion to undo the payment of the second ticket, and Demidovs guilty plea withdrawal has been approved, keeping him behind the wheel for now until municipal court issues its ruling. The case has even touched the Canadiens own player security department, with Mitch Janhevich initially handling the ticket as a routine matter, but the bigger question is still hanging over Demidov as he waits for the courts next move.
