The Montreal Canadiens have added Derek Lalonde to Martin St-Louis’ coaching staff, bringing in an experienced voice the club has been looking for.
Lalonde will officially serve as St-Louis’ new assistant coach, after Jim Hiller, who was named head coach of the Maple Leafs last month, decided not to keep him on Toronto’s bench. That move left Lalonde available, and Montreal moved quickly to bring him in.
For the Canadiens, this is the kind of hire plenty of people have been asking for over the past two years: a seasoned coach who can back up St-Louis behind the bench. As Anthony Marcotte put it, "The Canadiens have hired Derek Lalonde as an assistant coach after Jim Hiller chose not to retain him with the Maple Leafs. That will certainly please many fans who wanted the team to bring in an experienced coach to support Martin St-Louis."
Lalonde arrives with a strong résumé. He served as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning during their Stanley Cup runs in 2020 and 2021, then stayed on for a third straight trip to the Final in 2022.
That background matters. A veteran assistant can be a steadying presence when decisions have to be made fast, and Montreal now has someone with that kind of credibility in the room.
St-Louis, who has been behind the Canadiens’ bench since 2022, now gets a right-hand man with more coaching experience than he has himself. Montreal saw an opening, and it took it.

The Canadiens organizational depth chart got a little more interesting with the Trois-Rivires Lions confirming the return of a defenseman who arrived midway through last season and will now get a full year to settle in. He brings a varied background through the Elite Ice Hockey League, the OHL and Western University, and his next stop is expected to include a look at Montreals training camp in September.
For a club always searching for defenders who can handle more than a placeholder role, the appeal is obvious. A full season in Trois-Rivires should give him a better runway to show where he fits in the Canadiens system, and camp will offer the first real chance to see whether he can press for something beyond simple organizational depth.
