Trade chatter around Simon Edvinsson is heating up, and the Detroit Red Wings are making the price unmistakably clear: one premium piece may not be enough.
Michael Misa has become a central name in the talks, but Detroit reportedly wants more than a straight swap. The Montreal Canadiens are still in the conversation as well, with their name continuing to surface as the situation develops.
According to NHL insider David Pagnotta, conversations between Detroit and the San Jose Sharks have been going on for seven or eight days and have picked up pace recently.
There’s still some uncertainty about how Misa entered the discussion. Some sources say Detroit asked for him, while others say San Jose put him on the table.
What seems settled is the structure of the deal each side would prefer. The Sharks would be willing to do a one-for-one trade, while the Red Wings are looking for additional assets to move Edvinsson.
Edvinsson, the 2021 sixth-overall pick, has 60 points in 175 career games. He has not played this season and remains on the injured list because of a reported contract dispute.
Misa, taken second overall in 2025, has 31 points in 62 career games. He also had two power-play assists in San Jose’s 7-2 loss to Los Angeles.
Montreal has been tied to Detroit’s potential moves before, and that link hasn’t gone away. Elliotte Friedman previously reported that the Red Wings were becoming more serious about moving Dylan Larkin and Edvinsson, with the Canadiens among the teams connected to the situation.
The bigger obstacle may be the asking price. Pierre LeBrun has pointed to the Noah Dobson trade to Montreal as one of three comparable deals for a possible Edvinsson move, a sign that Detroit is aiming high.
That leaves interested teams with a tough decision, especially if a 19-year-old former second-overall pick still isn’t enough to get the conversation over the finish line.
For Montreal, the question is obvious: how much should the Canadiens give up for a defenseman who hasn’t played this season?
Pagnotta laid out where things stand.
“It’s certainly percolating and has been over the last 7, 8 days, give or take. The interest is always there, but it’s really picked up steam.
[...] Depending who you talk to, Detroit asked for Misa.
Others will say San Jose offered up Misa. [...]
What I do know is it would take more, from Detroit’s perspective, than just Misa to part with Edvinsson. That seems to be the situation right now between these two clubs: that Detroit is looking for more than Misa in exchange for Edvinsson.
I think the Sharks would be comfortable with one for one. It doesn’t sound right now, coming into today, like that’s enough.”

Canadiens Draft Debate Around Jacob Fowler Looks Even Bigger Now
The Canadiens 2023 draft room had a real goalie decision on its hands, and the choice has only aged better for Montreal. Jacob Fowler was the pick in the third round, and since then he has moved quickly into the kind of prospect status teams hope to find when they spend a mid-round selection on a goalie. He has already become Montreals starting goaltender and picked up some notable NHL accolades along the way, which is exactly why that draft debate still matters now.
Billy Ryan was one of the voices pushing hard for Fowler, and the organization is feeling the benefit of that conviction. The name on the other side of the discussion was Adam Gajan, who went to Chicago as the first goalie taken that year but has spent most of his time in lower leagues and has not reached the NHL yet. For Montreal, it is a reminder that goalie evaluations can swing a lot on one rooms judgment, and this one is looking like a win. [Read more 🡒]
Canadiens Face One Big Kucherov Question Fans Wont Ignore
Nikita Kucherovs request for a trade out of Tampa Bay has instantly become one of the most intriguing names on the market, and the timing only adds to the intrigue with the star winger entering the final year of his contract. For Montreal, the mere mention of his availability is enough to get attention, even if the Canadiens are only one of several teams believed to be in the mix as the situation develops.
The Lightning still control the process, which means this is far from a straight line to any one destination, and the race could quickly turn into a competition among multiple suitors. David Pagnotta has pointed to the Rangers, Blackhawks and Kraken as the teams most likely to drive the pursuit, but Montreal remains part of the conversation as fans wait to see whether the Canadiens can realistically stay in it if the bidding gets serious. Canadiens Face A Tough Montembeault Decision As Goalie Picture Shifts
Samuel Montembeaults situation in Montreal has taken another turn as the Canadiens goaltending picture keeps shifting around him. With Montembeault still on injured reserve and yet to play this season, Darren Dreger reported that the club may be willing to let him move on if Martin St. Louis continues leaning on Jacob Fowler and Jakub Dobes as the teams primary options in net.
The interest has already started to surface, with teams reaching out to Montreal about Montembeaults availability. For the Canadiens, the decision is less about simply sorting out a crowded crease than about what kind of return they might want if they decide his path back to the lineup is no longer in their plans.
