Canadiens Face A Telling Goalie Decision In St. Louis

In a twist for the Montreal Canadiens, local favorite Jakub Dobes might start over top performer Jacob Fowler, hinting at strategic decisions in their upcoming game against the St. Louis Blues.

A goaltending wrinkle may be brewing for the Canadiens in St. Louis, and it has everything to do with Jakub Dobes.

According to Eric Engels, Jacob Fowler is Montreal’s No. 1 goaltender, but Dobes could still get the nod against the Blues because of his connection to the area. Engels said he wouldn’t be shocked to see Dobes in net, even though Fowler has officially taken over the starting job.

That’s where the conversation gets interesting. Fowler has clearly earned the top spot, and he would also be a logical choice against St.

Louis. But Engels also noted that fans should relax whenever Dobes gets a start - while acknowledging they probably won’t.

The case for giving Dobes a look is easy enough to follow. In a backup role, he should still see between 27 and 33 games, and Montreal wants both goaltenders sharp. At the same time, the numbers tell a blunt story: Dobes has an .847 save percentage in five starts, while Fowler sits at .924 in six games, including one shutout.

Still, a 25-year-old goalie coming out of a rough stretch needs chances to settle in. Martin St. Louis has already put it plainly: handling goaltenders is a season-long balancing act, for the team and for the player.

The matchup itself is not a cakewalk, but it’s not an impossible ask either. St.

Louis is 5-5-1, scoring 3.2 goals per game, and is coming off a 4-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Montreal, meanwhile, is 6-3-2 and has won its last two games.

There’s also the rest of the road trip to consider. The Canadiens play Dallas on Thursday, and Fowler could be back in the crease for that final game after a day off.

Samuel Montembeault is expected to return in about two weeks, which would add a third goaltender to the mix, but that’s a separate chapter for later. For now, Dobes may have a chance to get himself moving in the right direction.

Oliver Kapanen Suddenly Has A Real Chance To Change Canadiens Plans

Oliver Kapanen is back from a lower-body injury and suddenly finds himself in a very different spot in the Canadiens lineup. After opening the season on the fourth line, he now has a chance to skate in a far more prominent role, the kind of opportunity that can alter how a team views a young center far beyond a short stretch of games.

Kapanen has yet to post a point in his four appearances this season, but Montreal has long liked the idea of what he could become as a reliable two-way center. With more responsibility now in front of him, the focus shifts from simply getting him back up to speed to whether he can show enough poise and skill to strengthen the clubs long-term plans down the middle. Canadiens Just Sparked A Trade Question Fans Wont Ignore

Adam Engstrom is back in the Canadiens lineup for the game in St. Louis, and the timing has only sharpened the attention around a situation that already had a few eyebrows raised. Arber Xhekaj is sitting out as a healthy scratch, which gives Montreal a different look on the blue line and opens the door to the kind of lineup discussion that tends to get louder when a teams roster decisions intersect with outside interest.

Adding to the intrigue, Red Wings executive Kris Draper was in attendance, a detail that naturally fed speculation about whether Detroit has Engstrom on its radar. There has been no official confirmation of any trade talk or scouting intent, but when a front office figure keeps showing up around a players team, it is the sort of thing fans notice right away, especially when the Canadiens are juggling personnel choices at the same time. Canadiens Suddenly Feel Closer To A Dylan Larkin Trade Watch

The Canadiens found themselves under a little extra scrutiny during their meeting with the Blues, with Red Wings assistant general manager Kris Draper in the stands as Detroit continued to do background work tied to Dylan Larkins trade market. It was a quiet but notable bit of scouting, the kind that can turn a routine regular-season game into a useful checkpoint for front offices looking ahead.

Darren Dreger reported that Detroit is keeping tabs on Montreal and St. Louis even though neither club is currently on Larkins list of preferred landing spots. For now, the Red Wings are simply gathering information and staying prepared in case that list changes, which leaves both teams in an interesting holding pattern as the conversation around Larkins availability continues to develop.
