Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens are back at work, and one of the biggest items on the list is getting their own restricted free agents signed.
That group includes Zachary Bolduc and Arber Xhekaj, but Bolduc is the name stirring up the most debate right now.
He remains unsigned, and a new contract projection has put a spotlight on just how tricky his next deal could be. CapWages, which projects future contracts, has Bolduc landing at a little more than $6 million per season on a seven-year term. That adds up to more than $42 million.
It’s a hefty figure, and plenty of people are meeting it with skepticism. At this stage, not many observers seem convinced the Canadiens would lock into that kind of long-term commitment.
The reason is pretty simple: Bolduc’s role in Montreal is still up in the air.
He could end up in the top six, or he could slide into an energy role on the fourth line. Martin St-Louis does not appear to have him near the top of the lineup at the moment, and that uncertainty makes any contract discussion much tougher to pin down.
Bolduc is 23 and is coming off a 30-point season, so there is a real case to be made depending on how Montreal sees him. If the Canadiens believe he belongs in their top six, then a deal in that $42 million range starts to look more believable.
If they don’t, then the conversation shifts closer to the kind of contract Jake Evans got, with inflation taken into account.
