The Montreal Canadiens had a chance to jump on Luke Evangelista, and they passed. That alone says plenty about where this front office is at right now.
The Nashville Predators sent Evangelista to the New Jersey Devils for a first-round pick and a second-round pick, both in 2028. For a 24-year-old forward coming off a 56-point season, that price feels about right. It also made him look like the kind of player Montreal should be chasing: young, productive, and the sort of piece that fits with how Kent Hughes wants this roster built.
And yet, Hughes didn’t make the move.
That’s where the real story starts. The Canadiens need a top-six forward, and Evangelista would have checked a lot of boxes on the surface.
He could have slotted onto the second line alongside Ivan Demidov, or even landed on the top line if Montreal wanted to push Juraj Slafkovsky down. But the Canadiens appear to be aiming higher than just “useful.”
What they still seem to need is size. That was one of the issues that showed up in the playoffs, especially against a team like the Carolina Hurricanes.
Evangelista doesn’t solve that. At 6'0" and 183 pounds, he isn’t the kind of heavy forward who changes the tone physically, and his career numbers back that up: 94 hits in 253 games.
That’s not really his game.
There’s also the bigger issue of position. Montreal’s most obvious need in the top six is at center, and Evangelista doesn’t answer that. Sure, the Canadiens could shuffle things around and mix up the top two lines, but that still leaves them without a clear solution down the middle.
So even if fans would have been eager to see Montreal make a move, the message here is pretty clear: they’re not interested in settling. They want the right fit, not just a name that looks good in the moment.
That approach may leave the Canadiens waiting a while longer. But for now, they seem content to hold out for something that actually moves them closer to the Stanley Cup Final.
