The St-Louis family name is headed into the pro ranks again, and this time it’s Ryan St-Louis taking the next step.
Ryan St-Louis, the son of Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis, has signed his first professional contract. The 23-year-old forward agreed to a one-year deal with the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League, officially launching his pro career.
For a player coming out of the NCAA and never selected in the NHL draft, it’s a hard-earned milestone. St-Louis put together 70 points, including 33 goals, in 121 NCAA games before landing this opportunity.
Abbotsford gives him a place to start, and the AHL is exactly the kind of environment where a young player has to prove he belongs. He’ll need to do that while working his way toward the next level.
The physical profile won’t do him many favors on its own. At 5-foot-10 and 181 pounds, St-Louis will have to lean on his skill and hockey sense to get noticed by NHL teams.
His game is built around creativity and offensive instincts, the kind of traits that can help a smaller player stand out if everything else clicks.
The family connection makes the story even harder to miss. Ryan followed the same undrafted path as his father, and Martin St-Louis famously beat the odds on his own road to the NHL.
