In the world of baseball, stories like Sam Ruta's remind us of the unique paths players can take. Despite setting impressive records in home runs, RBIs, and total bases during his college career, Ruta didn't hear his name called at the 2024 MLB Draft. Yet, his journey was far from over.
After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Ruta signed a minor-league deal with the Kansas City Royals. Last season, he hit .218 with 15 doubles and six homers in 73 games for the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals.
His dual role as a ballplayer and a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army naturally sparked curiosity among his teammates.
Carter Jensen, a Royals catcher, shared insights into Ruta's unique situation. "I've talked to him a lot about it," Jensen said.
"He's serving and balancing that with baseball. It's really inspiring to see."
Ruta was slated to start the season at Triple-A Omaha, but his military commitments took precedence, landing him on the military leave list-a status akin to being temporarily inactive. Mitch Maier, the Royals' director of player development, explained that Ruta is currently at Fort Benning in Georgia for armory training. Weather delays have extended his program, but he's expected to rejoin the team soon.
While specifics about Ruta's military duties remain sparse, Maier noted that his responsibilities involve tanks. Despite his focus on the Army, Ruta has managed to keep up with some baseball activities. Once his military stint wraps up, he'll head to Arizona to get back into game shape.
Jensen, intrigued by Ruta's military role, shared his fascination. "I asked him all about riding in a tank. It sounds pretty cool," Jensen said, reflecting the sense of awe Ruta's journey inspires.
