Sam Innes Stuns With Top-10 Finish at NCAA Championships

Sam Innes' impressive sixth-place finish marks a high point for the Tigers at the NCAA Indoor Championships, showcasing extraordinary progress and determination.

Innes wrapped up the Tigers’ indoor track & field season with a standout performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

NCAA Indoor Weight Throw Highlights

Innes led the charge for Mizzou, securing a sixth-place finish in the men’s weight throw with a season-best mark of 22.70m. His hard work throughout the indoor season truly shone, delivering a performance that left the crowd impressed.

Assistant distance coach Tanner Anderson praised Innes, highlighting his growth into one of the nation’s top competitors, attributing this success to both Innes’ mindset and Weir’s coaching.

The competition was fierce, with Ryan Johnson from Iowa State taking the top spot. Johnson’s throw of 25.64m not only won the event but also set a new meet and faculty record. Earlier in February, he had shattered the collegiate record with a throw of 25.66m.

The championship was packed with talent from universities like Oregon, Penn State, Illinois, and Yale, making for an exciting showcase of athletic prowess.

Saturday's Championship Finals

Saturday promises a full lineup of championship finals, with distance runners vying for national titles. The action kicks off in the afternoon with men’s shot put, followed by men’s and women’s high jump, women’s triple jump and shot put, and later, women’s pole vault and men’s triple jump.

The heptathlon concludes with the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m race. Track finals start in the evening, featuring the women’s and men’s mile, 60m, and 400m finals.

Middle-distance events include the 800m and 200m finals, along with the 60m hurdles finals for both men and women. The day wraps up with the 3,000m races and the thrilling 4x400m relays.

In other news, Kobi Walker will represent Australia in cross country at the 2026 FISU World Championship on March 14-15.

Looking Ahead to the Outdoor Season

With indoor season concluded, the Tigers are gearing up for the outdoor track & field season, starting with the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 20-21.

Due to renovations at their home track, the Tigers will hit the road, culminating in a thrilling showdown against Kansas University at the Rock Chalk Classic on May 1-2, where fans can witness the storied rivalry firsthand.
