Missouri will open its season Tuesday night without CJ Gunn after the Southeastern Conference ruled the transfer guard ineligible, according to CBS Sports insider Matt Norlander.
Norlander reported Monday at 1:40 p.m. that Gunn was barred after earning money from a signed pro contract in May, and cited head coach Dennis Gates as the source for the news. Gates, who spoke with reporters around noon Monday, said he had only recently learned there was an issue.
"I got a phone call probably this evening that I have to have to figure out what's going to take place with CJ," Gates said Monday. "So I'm looking forward to finding that out as well."
Norlander also said Missouri must submit its roster to the SEC Monday night before Tuesday’s opener against Cleveland State, and that there is no appeal available.
Gunn, a 6-foot-7 transfer guard, played three games in the Canadian Elite Basketball League in May after four years at Indiana and DePaul. He received $524 from those games. Because the ruling came down before Missouri’s opener and the G League draft has already passed, Gunn is also ineligible to be drafted by the G League.
Even without Gunn, Missouri still has eight guards on the roster. That group includes five-star freshman Jason Crowe Jr. along with transfers Jamier Jones and Kennard Davis Jr., plus a mix of returners, younger players and other newcomers.
Crowe picked up another bit of recognition Monday when he was named to the Naismith Trophy Men's College Player of the Year Watch List. He is one of 50 players on the list and one of five freshmen included.
"We have a special kid and I never want to take him away from his strengths of scoring the basketball, but also the gravity that he presents on the court for any opposing defenses," Gates said regarding Crowe's preseason hype on Monday. "What he'll continue to learn is the schemes of college basketball and how he has to use his teammates to execute the schemes more so than he did in the past in high school.
Crowe has already flashed in Missouri’s exhibitions, leading the Tigers in scoring and assists in both games against Kansas State and UNLV. He averaged 23 points and 5.5 assists across those two contests.
"What I'm proud about is the way he's been playing defense. He's doing a great job communicating, great job leading and oftentimes he and I got to have our one-on-ones, and we do it often," Gates said. "A level of intellect in that conversation is a little bit of suggestion on back and forth, but not just me talking to him; it's him talking and communicating based off his lens because he has a special lens that he sees the game in."
Missouri tips off Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Cleveland State at Mizzou Arena, with Crowe set for his first regular-season game and first home game.

Missouris Arkansas Win Made One Position Battle Harder To Ignore
Missouris Week 9 win over Arkansas offered a little something from just about every position group, and that is part of what made the game so encouraging. Connor Bazelak kept the offense moving without needing a huge statistical day, Jamal Roberts pushed past 1,000 rushing yards for the season and scored twice, and the offensive line gave the Tigers the kind of protection that lets a game plan breathe.
On the other side of the ball, Missouris front was every bit as disruptive, controlling the run and getting after Arkansas quarterback KJ Jackson repeatedly. The secondary, though, had a rougher afternoon giving up plenty through the air, which only sharpened the focus on a position battle that has become harder to ignore as the Tigers sort out where they are strongest and where they still need answers. Mizzou Opens With A Rotation Test Fans Didnt Expect
Missouris season opener arrives with a little more uncertainty than the Tigers probably wanted, as they get ready to face Cleveland State without Jaylen Carey and Luke Northweather. Carey is suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, while Northweather is sidelined with an injury, leaving Dennis Gates to sort through an early rotation puzzle before the first meaningful game even tips off.
Gates and senior captain Trent Pierce both pointed back to the lessons from preseason exhibition play, where the Tigers had a chance to see what needs cleaning up before the games start counting. Gates also singled out freshman Jason Crowe Jr. for his development, and the matchup adds a familiar edge for him too, with Cleveland State coached by one of his former assistants. [Read more 🡒]
Missouri Just Set Up A Bigger Test Than Fans Expected
Missouris climb into the No. 19 spot in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Top 25 is the latest sign that the Tigers have turned a solid start into something more meaningful. At 6-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play after the win over Arkansas, they benefited from a chaotic week around the country, with several ranked teams taking losses and reshuffling the polls ahead of Week 10.
Now the attention shifts to a much tougher measuring stick. Missouri is headed into a matchup with Texas, which sits at No. 10, and that gives the Tigers a chance to see whether this rise is just the product of a crowded rankings week or the start of something sturdier. The full Top 25 lists only sharpen the backdrop, but the next game will tell the bigger story. [Read more 🡒]
