Mizzou Suddenly Has A Future Schedule Problem Fans Wont Like

Illinois' decision to cancel two games with Missouri has left Mizzou scrambling to fill their future football schedule amidst new college playoff requirements.

Missouri’s future football schedule just took another hit, and now the Tigers are left trying to patch together a nonconference slate that suddenly looks a lot less settled.

Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said Tuesday the Illini are pulling out of the first two games of their future series with Missouri, wiping out matchups that had been set for 2027 and 2028. Illinois has already swapped those games for a home-and-home series with Notre Dame.

That leaves the Mizzou-Illinois agreement in a much smaller place than it started. The schools originally lined up for an eight-game series, but that number had already been trimmed to six.

Now it’s down to four, with games still listed for Columbia in 2029 and 2033 and Champaign in 2032 and 2034. Even those dates, though, now appear to be up in the air.

The original contract included a $500,000 payment for cancellation or failure to show up by either school, though PowerMizzou.com has not been able to confirm whether that clause still applies.

Mizzou athletic director Laird Veatch made clear the Tigers aren’t happy about the move.

"We are disappointed by Illinois' decision to withdraw from multiple future football games, including a home game for Mizzou in 2027," Veatch said in a statement provided to PowerMizzou.com. "We are exploring all available options to address this matter."

The timing matters because Missouri still needs to fill out its schedule under the new College Football Playoff setup. With the expanded 24-team field, teams are required to play 10 games against other Power Four opponents. Missouri already has nine SEC games, but the loss of Illinois leaves the Tigers without a Power Four nonconference game for next season.

Right now, the 2027 nonconference slate includes home games against Illinois State and Florida Atlantic, plus a road trip to San Diego State. That SDSU game is widely viewed as the one most likely to be dropped, since it’s on the road. Missouri’s SEC schedule that year includes four home games and five road games, and with Illinois originally set for Columbia, the Tigers now need a Power Four home game if they can find one.

The 2028 situation is a little different. Missouri was supposed to travel to Champaign that season, so if the Tigers can land a Power Four opponent willing to come to Columbia in 2027, that game could potentially slide back into place in 2028. But that year’s schedule already has home games against San Diego State, Northern Illinois and Southeast Missouri State, and one of those would have to be canceled or moved.

The series itself has been around a long time. Missouri and Illinois have met 24 times, with the first game coming in 1896.

The Tigers lead the series 17-7, and they won six straight games from 2002 to 2010 in St. Louis.

Whether the rivalry gets to a 25th meeting is now uncertain.

Illinois is also Missouri’s only Power Four opponent currently on the books for 2029. That season, the Tigers are scheduled to host Missouri State and Army and visit Northern Illinois.

Dennis Gates Faces A Personal Mizzou Opener Fans Will Want To See

Missouris regular season tips off Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena against Cleveland State, and the matchup carries a little extra meaning for Dennis Gates. The Tigers coach spent time leading the Vikings before arriving in Columbia, so this opener is more than just the first chance to see a revamped Missouri roster in action. It also gives fans an early look at how Gates plans to blend five-star freshman Jason Crowe Jr., a group of four-star transfers and a handful of returning veterans into a team with real expectations.

On the other side, Cleveland State arrives under head coach Rob Summers ready to start its season without the benefit of a public exhibition game. That adds a layer of uncertainty to a night that already has a personal edge for Gates, who will be seeing familiar colors from the opposite sideline. For Missouri, it is an opening-night test with a little more story attached than usual, and one that should tell plenty about where this group stands right away. [Read more 🡒]

Florida States Coaching Search Just Took A Notable Turn

Florida States coaching search has already started to ripple beyond Tallahassee, and Missouri fans have a familiar name in the conversation. Eli Drinkwitz was asked about the opening after the Seminoles moved on from Mike Norvell, and he quickly shut down any notion that he was angling for the job, keeping the focus on Missouris immediate business.

That business is a big one, with Texas next on the schedule and no shortage of attention around Drinkwitz as the coaching carousel spins. Norvells exit came after seven seasons and a 41-39 record, including only 10 wins over the past three years, but for Missouri the more relevant detail is that its head coach is trying to keep the noise out of the building while the seasons next test looms. Mizzou Suddenly Has A Scheduling Problem Fans Wont Like

A planned home-and-home with Illinois is no longer on Missouris future football schedule, leaving the Tigers with an unexpected opening for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. Illinois has backed out of the series to make room for Notre Dame, and Missouri athletic director Laird Veatch said the school is disappointed while looking at ways to fill the gap.

For Missouri, the issue is bigger than just losing a rivalry game on the calendar. The Tigers now need to line up a Power 4 opponent for 2027 to satisfy scheduling requirements, and that search adds another layer of uncertainty to a slate that was supposed to already be set. [Read more 🡒]
