Mizzou Opener Suddenly Comes With A Lineup Problem Dennis Gates Must Manage

As the Missouri Tigers gear up for their season opener, head coach Dennis Gates navigates a series of player availability challenges that could impact team dynamics.

Missouri’s season opener arrives with a few moving parts, and Dennis Gates spent Monday sorting through them one by one.

The biggest update: senior forward Jaylen Carey will not be available to start the season. Gates said Carey has been suspended indefinitely after a violation of team rules, and he did not offer any additional details about the decision.

Carey had been around the team during the preseason. He did not play in either exhibition against Kansas State or UNLV, but he was present for practices and pregame warmups. Still, Gates made it clear Monday that Carey’s status remains on hold.

“He'll be prepared to play in the future. He's going to help us a lot.

The rebounding, that's something that he brings to the table. So ultimately, having him down there and low-post scoring and things like that, it will definitely help this team and help us in the future going forward.”

Missouri will also be without fifth-year senior forward Luke Northweather for the opener, though Gates described that absence as “precautionary.” Northweather missed the team’s scrimmage against UNLV last week because he was the best man in his brother’s wedding, something Gates said he supported.

The other question mark is DePaul transfer CJ Gunn, whose eligibility case is still unresolved. Gunn has been suing the NCAA for a fifth year of eligibility, and he sat out both preseason games. Gates said Monday he still wasn’t sure whether Gunn would be available this week.

“I've got a phone call, probably this evening, that I have to figure out what's going to take place with CJ,” Gates said. “So, I'm looking forward to finding that out as well.

There was better news on Jamier Jones. The sophomore wing, who came over from Providence, is expected to play Tuesday after tweaking his ankle in the first half of Missouri’s Oct. 23 exhibition against Kansas State. He sat out the rest of that game and also missed the UNLV exhibition, but Gates said the injury does not appear to be serious.

Mark Mitchell is also in line to play. The fifth-year senior forward is currently eligible because of a preliminary injunction granted by a Kentucky court, though his case is still active and the NCAA has appealed. That means he can suit up unless the lower court’s ruling is overturned.

Mitchell played in both preseason games and should have a major role in the rotation, but Gates said he is still deciding exactly how to use him. That includes whether Mitchell will start.

“I have to still build the program while thinking of the risk,” Gates said. “At any point in time, Mark's situation can be turned back off.

So how do I keep the integrity of the team, right? I have to figure out if I'm gonna start him or not, and I have not made a decision.

So those things play a role because you don't want interruption and growth taken away from the guys that, long-term, can benefit from that, like a freshman in Toni Bryant, or even a sophomore in Bryson Tiller. I want guys to be able, in their first year, to operate in a way that they're not interrupted.

Mark has done a great job. The team has done a great job.

But me, as the head coach, that's the risk that I have to look into and figure out what I'm gonna do.

“I'm thankful for where it's at now. But will that last throughout the year?

We don't know. We don't know.

Everyone is in a watershed moment. This is new for everyone, but I have to obviously move forward without sort of hindering the growth of the team in case that band-aid gets ripped off.

Now, the best part about it is, Mark Mitchell is ready to go. He's going to play.

Whether he starts or not, he's going to play starter minutes, and that's the bulk of what you have to understand, and that's how I have to play it.”

Missouri opens the season Tuesday against Cleveland State at 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.

Mizzous Backcourt Just Lost A Piece At The Worst Time

Missouris backcourt took an unexpected hit just as the season is about to begin, with transfer guard CJ Gunn ruled ineligible by the Southeastern Conference after earning money from a signed professional contract in May. Head coach Dennis Gates confirmed the situation, and the Tigers now have to finalize their roster without Gunn ahead of the opener, a setback for a team that had been counting on added depth in the perimeter rotation.

The timing makes the loss sting even more because Missouri was already building around a guard-heavy group, and now it will move forward with eight guards instead. Among them is freshman Jason Crowe Jr., who was named to the Naismith Trophy Mens College Player of the Year Watch List, giving the Tigers at least one notable young piece to lean on as they sort out the backcourt picture. Missouris Arkansas Win Made One Position Battle Harder To Ignore

Missouris Week 9 win over Arkansas offered a little something from just about every position group, and that is part of what made the game so encouraging. Connor Bazelak kept the offense moving without needing a huge statistical day, Jamal Roberts pushed past 1,000 rushing yards for the season and scored twice, and the offensive line gave the Tigers the kind of protection that lets a game plan breathe.

On the other side of the ball, Missouris front was every bit as disruptive, controlling the run and getting after Arkansas quarterback KJ Jackson repeatedly. The secondary, though, had a rougher afternoon giving up plenty through the air, which only sharpened the focus on a position battle that has become harder to ignore as the Tigers sort out where they are strongest and where they still need answers. Mizzou Opens With A Rotation Test Fans Didnt Expect

Missouris season opener arrives with a little more uncertainty than the Tigers probably wanted, as they get ready to face Cleveland State without Jaylen Carey and Luke Northweather. Carey is suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, while Northweather is sidelined with an injury, leaving Dennis Gates to sort through an early rotation puzzle before the first meaningful game even tips off.

Gates and senior captain Trent Pierce both pointed back to the lessons from preseason exhibition play, where the Tigers had a chance to see what needs cleaning up before the games start counting. Gates also singled out freshman Jason Crowe Jr. for his development, and the matchup adds a familiar edge for him too, with Cleveland State coached by one of his former assistants. [Read more 🡒]
