South Carolina’s 41-34 loss to Mississippi State on Saturday didn’t just drop the Gamecocks into an early SEC hole. It also turned the volume all the way up on the pressure surrounding Shane Beamer.
The Gamecocks were at home and entered the day as slight favorites, but Mississippi State left with the win after flipping the game in the second half. South Carolina led 23-14 at halftime, then watched the Bulldogs pile up 27 straight points across the third and fourth quarters. By early in the fourth, Mississippi State had pushed the margin to 41-23.
That stretch was enough to send frustration spilling out of the stands. Midway through the fourth quarter, a group of South Carolina fans began chanting “Fire Beamer” as the Gamecocks tried to claw back.
Some fans also started heading for the exits late in the second half. South Carolina did manage 10 points in the final four minutes, but the comeback attempt came too late to change the mood.
Beamer entered the season with his seat already warm after South Carolina went 4-8 last year, his second losing season in Columbia. The Gamecocks had gone 9-4 in 2024, one year after finishing 5-7 in 2023, but this latest loss adds another rough chapter to his tenure.
The road ahead does not offer much breathing room. South Carolina travels to No.
10 Alabama next week, and still has road games against Florida and Oklahoma, plus home dates with Tennessee, Texas A&M and Georgia. If the Gamecocks fail to reach a bowl game, it would be hard to imagine Beamer Ball continuing in Columbia.
Beamer’s buyout is currently $27.9 million, according to Greenville Online. That figure drops to $22.1 million on Dec. 31, a detail that could matter if South Carolina starts weighing a move.
