Mississippi State Heads Into LSU With One Huge Kamario Taylor Question

Kamario Taylor's Week 7 status remains on shaky ground as he battles a turf toe injury while Mississippi State braces for a crucial SEC clash against LSU.

Kamario Taylor’s availability remains up in the air as Mississippi State heads into Saturday afternoon’s SEC matchup at No. 22 LSU, but a new report suggests the sophomore quarterback is still pushing to get on the field.

On3 insider Pete Nakos reported Friday afternoon, less than 24 hours before kickoff in Baton Rouge, that Taylor “has been day-to-day and is working to play this week.”

That’s a big swing factor for the 16th-ranked Bulldogs, who go into the noon ET game on ESPN still without a clear answer on whether their breakout quarterback will suit up. Taylor, who helped launch Mississippi State into the AP rankings with a 4-0 start in September, has put together a huge start to the season: 1,450 passing yards in five games, along with 17 touchdown passes and four interceptions. He has also added 159 rushing yards and one score on the ground.

The uncertainty around Taylor has lingered beyond Mississippi State’s last outing, a loss to Alabama two weeks ago. The Bulldogs were off last week, but Nakos reported that Taylor’s issue goes back further than that game.

According to the report, Taylor has “been dealing with a turf toe injury since the end of the Missouri game,” referring to Mississippi State’s home win over the Tigers on Sept. 26.

Taylor was still listed as questionable on the SEC injury report Thursday night, and Nakos added that “sources have shared some skepticism with On3 that he will be able to play.”

With Taylor’s status still unresolved for the trip to Death Valley, attention has also shifted to what the Kalshi market currently says about Mississippi State’s chances in Baton Rouge, with or without its star quarterback.

Former Mississippi State Standout Suddenly Faces NFL Uncertainty

Nineteen former Mississippi State players opened the NFL season on active rosters, a reminder of how much Bulldogs talent is still spread across the league. Dak Prescott has been turning in strong work as a passer, Duane Brown earned a high offensive grade, Cameron Emerson made it back from an Achilles injury to help the New Orleans Saints, and Carlos Simmons has continued producing for the Tennessee Titans.

One of the more unexpected developments came with Robert Sweat, whose place in Chicago suddenly shifted from routine roster note to a much bigger question. The Bears handed the defensive end a suspension that will keep him out for two games, and the situation now adds another layer of uncertainty for a player Mississippi State fans have kept tabs on since his college days. Mississippi States Season May Hinge On One Josh Hubbard Question

Josh Hubbard heads into his senior season with the kind of recognition that puts a spotlight on everything Mississippi State does. The Bulldogs standout guard was named preseason first-team All-SEC, and after a roster overhaul, Chris Jans is trying to build a team that does not ask Hubbard to carry every possession the way it often has in the past.

That is where the new pieces come in, even if the fit is still taking shape. Mississippi State added help across the roster, including RJ Johnson and Thomas Bassong, with the goal of finding a more balanced identity and a rotation the staff can trust. For the Bulldogs, the bigger question is not just how productive Hubbard can be again, but how quickly the rest of the roster turns that talent into something steadier and more sustainable. Mississippi State's Fast Start Faces Its Biggest Test Yet

Mississippi States early-season surge has been built on a sharper offense and a more efficient passing game, the kind of progress that has pushed the Bulldogs to a 4-1 start and into the top 20 nationally. After last years frustrations, the difference has been obvious enough to give the program real momentum, especially with the way the attack has produced more consistently and looked more balanced across the first month of the season.

Now comes the part that tends to separate a promising opening from something more lasting. The Bulldogs are about to run into a brutal stretch with LSU, Oklahoma and Texas ahead, and the injury picture is already adding pressure to a team trying to prove its rise is real. Kamario Taylor has been a central part of that conversation, and his status looms over what could be a defining week for Mississippi States season. [Read more 🡒]
