Mississippi State Fans Have A New SEC Quarterback Debate To Watch

Despite setbacks, Trinidad Chambliss solidifies his reputation as a top SEC quarterback, showing resilience and skill through standout performances.

Josh Pate kept Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss at the top of his SEC quarterback rankings after Week 4, even with the Rebels taking their first loss of the season and giving up 52 points at Florida.

Pate released his updated top 10 on Sept. 29 and again slotted Chambliss at No. 1 on what he called the “John Mateer Memorial” list, a nod to his own miss last season when he ranked the Oklahoma quarterback first before a hand injury.

Chambliss has backed up the faith through four games. He’s completed 102 of 144 passes for 1,222 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions, while also adding 108 rushing yards and four scores.

He already has two 300-yard passing performances, including his best showing in Week 3, when he threw for a career-high 363 yards in Ole Miss’ 32-24 win over LSU and former Rebels coach Lane Kiffin. Chambliss also scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 14-yard run in that game.

Pate has been high on the Grand Rapids, Michigan, native since the preseason, when he also put Chambliss No. 1 in his August rankings.

"He's the most dangerous player in college football to me," Pate said at the time. "He had eight games last year of 300-plus passing yards, obviously a really dynamic run element, and theoretically, his best could still be ahead of him."

That was a major rise from where Pate had him a year ago, when Chambliss checked in sixth in the SEC ahead of Week 9.

Ole Miss fell 52-28 at Florida on Sept. 26 and dropped to 3-1, but Chambliss still threw for 298 yards. The Rebels were without injured star running back Kewan Lacy, and the defense never found answers.

"This isn't going to define our season," Chambliss said after the game.

"I'm super confident in our team still," Chambliss added. "I feel like we can still compete for an SEC championship and national championship, but now we just have to go 1-0 every week."

The Rebels have a bye in Week 5, giving Chambliss two weeks to clean things up.

Behind him in Pate’s new rankings is Mississippi State’s Kamario Taylor at No. 2. Taylor’s 14 touchdown passes are tied for the most in the country.

Alabama’s Keelon Russell comes in at No. 3, and he’ll face Taylor on Saturday when No. 7 Alabama visits No. 16 Mississippi State.

Missouri’s Austin Simmons is No. 4 after losing the Ole Miss job to Chambliss when he was hurt last season. Georgia’s Gunner Stockton is fifth, followed by Florida’s Aaron Philo at No. 6.

LSU’s Sam Leavitt is seventh, Kentucky’s Kenny Minchey is eighth, Texas’ Arch Manning is ninth and Vanderbilt freshman Jared Curtis rounds out the top 10.

Manning was second in Pate’s preseason rankings, but he’s dropped to ninth even as Texas sits No. 1 in the AP poll. Over his last two games against UTSA and Tennessee, Manning has thrown for 362 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Mateer, who was third in August, did not make the new top 10. South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers, Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed and Auburn’s Byrum Brown also fell out. Russell moved up from sixth to third, and Simmons climbed from 10th to fourth.

Mississippi State Defense Could Decide How Long Alabama Stays Comfortable

The buildup around Alabama and Mississippi State has centered on the quarterbacks, with Keelon Russell and Kamario Taylor drawing plenty of attention ahead of this weekends meeting. Analyst Josh Pate even called it a matchup that could rank among the biggest quarterback showdowns of the 2026 season, and Russell has already started to look more settled after a slow start, helped along by an Alabama offensive line that has given him a cleaner platform to work from.

Mississippi State, though, has reason to believe the game wont be decided only by how the quarterbacks handle the moment. The Bulldogs defense has already piled up nine sacks this season, and that kind of pressure can change the feel of a game quickly if it starts getting home. For Mississippi State, the question is whether that pass rush can make Alabama uncomfortable early enough to keep the Tide from settling in on offense. [Read more 🡒]

Mississippi State Gets Its Biggest Jeff Lebby Test Yet Against Alabama

Mississippi State is getting the kind of stage that can say a lot about where the program is under Jeff Lebby, with No. 7 Alabama set to come to Starkville for a nationally televised game on Oct. 3, 2026. It is the sort of matchup that tends to sharpen every storyline around a coach still looking for his first signature win, especially with the Bulldogs trying to measure themselves against one of the sports standard-bearers.

Alabama enters as the favorite, according to ESPNs Football Power Index, and the buildup has already centered on how Mississippi State handles the setting as much as the opponent. Mississippi State coach Kalen DeBoer has talked about preparing for the game environment, which is part of the challenge here, because the Bulldogs will need more than just energy to make this one interesting. Keelon Russell Is Giving Alabama Fans A New Reason To Dream

First-year quarterbacks are already reshaping the conversation around the SEC, and the early returns have given fans in Tuscaloosa and beyond plenty to follow. Keelon Russell, a five-star recruit ranked No. 2 in the 2025 class, has settled in quickly, and his production has stood out enough to put him at the top of the conference in passer grading, according to Pro Football Focus.

Kamario Taylor has been making his own case on another side of the league, with the four-star prospect ranked No. 80 in the 2025 class flashing the kind of efficiency that gets attention fast. He sits 11th nationally in EPA per play among qualifying quarterbacks, which makes the next stretch of the season worth watching closely as both newcomers keep trying to prove their strong starts are more than just an opening-week storyline.
