BATON ROUGE, La. - Mississippi State pushed all week to get Kamario Taylor on the field against LSU, but the star quarterback never got to the point where he could go.
Coach Jeff Lebby said Taylor did everything he could to try to play in the Week 7 matchup, yet the Bulldogs ultimately decided late in the week that he still wasn’t ready. Taylor sat out the 31-0 loss on Oct. 17 at Tiger Stadium, with Mississippi State suffering its first shutout loss since 2020.
“As we moved through the week, and as we got closer and closer, even up to last night, he just wasn't (ready)," Lebby said. "He's worked his butt off to get back and go play.
He's just not quite ready to play. He's going to need to have a great week this week and he will to give himself a chance to play this next Saturday.
I'm proud of him and who's he's been. He's worked his butt off, but just not quite there yet."
Taylor was listed as questionable on the first two SEC availability reports before being moved to doubtful on Oct. 16.
He was ruled out 90 minutes before kickoff and was on the sideline in a boot on his right foot. Mississippi State still hasn’t said exactly what the injury is.
“He's not going to wake up tomorrow morning and be 100% so we're going to manage it,” Lebby said.
In Taylor’s place, sophomore Billy Puckett made his first career start. The former walk-on from Jackson Prep handled the offense while Mississippi State continued to search for answers without its top quarterback.
Puckett finished 16 of 26 for 121 yards with one interception, and he added 36 rushing yards. The game turned quickly when he was picked off on the Bulldogs’ second drive, and Mississippi State then went three-and-out on five straight possessions by turning the ball over on downs.
Even without scoring, the Bulldogs still found some movement. They reached LSU territory on six different drives and finished with 291 total yards, but they never cashed in.
“We got to reset, we got to recover and we got to understand, man, we got a lot of football ahead of us," Lebby said. "We got everything that we want to get done is out ahead of us.”
The Bulldogs weren’t at full strength elsewhere, either. Running back Fluff Bothwell also missed the game with an injury, though he traveled with the team and wore a boot on his left foot during the contest. Lebby did not provide an update on Bothwell afterward.
Mississippi State still managed 170 rushing yards on 42 carries. Kolin Wilson led the way with 75 yards on 18 attempts, Xavier Gayten added 36 yards on eight carries, and freshman JJ Hill chipped in 23 yards on five carries in the fourth quarter.
“Very inconsistent,” Lebby said of the run game. "The short-yardage issues were issues getting down there on the 2-yard line and not being able to go score a touchdown.
We got all kinds of opportunities in the first half for the game to be closer and now you apply a little bit of pressure. Instead, we didn't take advantage of some of those things."
Mississippi State now turns to Oklahoma, which visits Davis Wade Stadium on Oct. 24 at 2:30 p.m. The Bulldogs have no open dates left, and it will be the first time Lebby, as a head coach, faces the team he played for before switching to a student coach because of an injury.
Taylor’s numbers this season show why Mississippi State wanted him available: a 66.3% completion rate, 1,450 passing yards, 17 touchdown passes, four interceptions, 159 rushing yards and one rushing score.

LSU Just Got The Break It Needed In The Playoff Chase
LSU heads into the second half of its season at 4-2, still needing both cleaner play and a little help if it wants to stay in the College Football Playoff picture. The next step on that road runs through Mississippi State, and the timing could hardly be better for the Tigers, with a matchup against a Bulldogs team already dealing with injury uncertainty at key spots.
Mississippi States quarterback depth could be a factor if Kamario Taylor is limited, leaving Parker Puckett and AJ Swann in the conversation behind center. The Bulldogs are also watching Fluff Bothwell's status, and the ripple effects matter for a team trying to stay competitive while LSU keeps chasing the kind of stretch it needs against ranked opponents to keep its postseason hopes alive. Lane Kiffin Had A Brutal Response To Mississippi States Injury-Hit Loss
Mississippi States night in Baton Rouge never had much chance to settle into anything resembling a competitive SEC game, and the Bulldogs left with a 31-0 loss as LSU rode a polished performance from quarterback Sam Leavitt. Leavitt completed 31 of 38 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns, the kind of efficiency that can put a game out of reach before the fourth quarter ever becomes a factor.
Afterward, LSU coach Lane Kiffin made clear he wasnt interested in softening the edges of the result based on Mississippi States situation. The Bulldogs were already shorthanded, and the question hanging over the postgame discussion was whether those absences changed the meaning of the win at all, a point Kiffin brushed aside in a way that only added to the sting of an already lopsided night. Mississippi State Faces A Defining Home Test After Another Brutal Loss
A home date with Oklahoma arrives at a tricky moment for Mississippi State, which is trying to shake off a 31-0 loss to LSU and find some traction on offense. The Bulldogs have spent the week sorting through the fallout from two straight lopsided defeats, and the possibility of quarterback Kamario Taylor returning from injury adds a layer of intrigue to what could otherwise feel like another uphill Saturday.
Oklahoma comes in with momentum after upsetting Texas, but it still has Kentucky ahead before turning its full attention to Starkville. For Mississippi State, this is the kind of game that can either steady a season or deepen the concerns, especially if the offense can finally get back to something closer to full strength.
