Mississippi State’s trip to Minnesota has all the makings of a grinder, and the betting market agrees. The line has hovered near a pick ’em all week, and ESPN’s SP+ has the Bulldogs and Golden Gophers stacked right next to each other at No. 34 and No. 35.
That’s what makes Friday’s Week 2 matchup at Huntington Bank Stadium so intriguing. Mississippi State (1-0) is stepping into the first game of a brutal nine-game run against power conference opponents, while Minnesota (1-0) is trying to keep rolling after both teams opened with blowout wins.
The Bulldogs hammered Louisiana-Monroe 62-13 behind five touchdowns from Kamario Taylor and a program-record 762 yards of offense. Minnesota answered with a 59-7 win over Eastern Illinois.
The quarterback spotlight is bright on both sides. Taylor and Minnesota’s Drake Lindsey are each seen as NFL prospects, and this game may tell us a lot about how each offense holds up against a real test.
Minnesota wants to lean on the line of scrimmage and make the game physical. Mississippi State wants to crank the tempo and turn it into a track meet.
That clash of styles is why this one feels like it could come down to the final snap.
Mississippi State has already shown what its offense can do when it gets rolling. Taylor looked like a quarterback who had taken a real step forward in the opener, and now he gets his first road start.
That’s a big ask against a Minnesota defense that will be far more demanding than what the Bulldogs saw in Week 1. The Bulldogs also have weapons around him, with Fluff Bothwell at running back and Anthony Evans III at receiver.
Up front, the offensive line is walking into its first major challenge of the season.
There’s also a new look on defense for Mississippi State, with Zach Arnett taking over as coordinator. The Bulldogs held ULM to three points in the first half while building a 41-3 lead, and cornerback Kelley Jones is the headliner on that side of the ball. Mississippi State also believes its defensive line is much improved.
Minnesota, though, has its own edges to work with. Anthony Smith led the Big Ten in sacks last season, and he’s the kind of pass rusher who can make life miserable for Taylor.
The Gophers also want to keep feeding the run game, where fourth-year starter Darius Taylor remains the focal point. He posted 986 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 2024, then followed with 670 yards and four scores in 10 games last season.
If Minnesota’s offensive line takes control, the ball is likely to stay in his hands.
There’s another name Mississippi State has to account for in Javon Tracy. He turned in a huge opener, returning two punts for touchdowns while adding 98 receiving yards.
Minnesota’s home field has been a real advantage, too. The Gophers have won eight straight games at Huntington Bank Stadium. And they’ve shown they know how to close tight games, going 4-1 in one-score contests last season, while Mississippi State was 2-3.
As for the injury situation, there is no official report, but Mississippi State has three key players to watch: linebacker Zakari Tillman, wide receiver Ayden Williams and tight end Joeseph Skipworth. None of them played in the opener. Jeff Lebby said on Sept. 7 that he would not discuss injuries for this game.
The most likely outcome is a one-possession battle. Minnesota’s edge up front should be enough to tilt it late, and a field goal could decide it.
