Kalen DeBoer is taking an unusual approach for Alabama’s trip to Mississippi State, and it comes down to geography, timing and a little bit of comfort.
Instead of following the usual road-game routine and heading to Starkville the day before, Alabama plans to leave Tuscaloosa on Saturday morning for the 11:00 a.m. kickoff. That means no overnight stay for the Crimson Tide, just a quick turnaround before an early SEC test.
DeBoer said the decision fits the situation and pointed to the team’s history with similar early starts. “We've had some success with those morning games, but we got to go on the road and travel that morning,” DeBoer said. “So, it's gonna be a little different.”
The setup makes sense on paper because Tuscaloosa and Starkville are about 90 minutes apart by road. The campuses are in different states, but they’re close enough that Alabama can make the trip without spending the night in Mississippi State.
That doesn’t make the schedule any less demanding. With an 11:00 a.m. start, Alabama still has to get moving early enough to arrive, settle in and warm up before kickoff. DeBoer said this kind of early-morning travel is not new for him, which is part of why he’s comfortable using it again here.
The timing adds even more weight to a game that already matters plenty in the SEC race. Mississippi State and Alabama both enter undefeated, and a road win over a top-20 team would go a long way for the Crimson Tide’s College Football Playoff case.
