The College Football Playoff is holding steady with a 12-team format this season, but there’s a shake-up happening within the selection committee. Gus Malzahn, a familiar name in college football circles, is stepping into a new role as one of the committee’s newest members. Many remember Malzahn for leading Auburn to the national championship game back in 2013.
During his tenure with the Tigers from 2013 to 2020, Malzahn compiled a solid 68-35 record. His first season was a standout, though Auburn never quite reached those heights again under his leadership.
In addition to Malzahn, the College Football Playoff Management Committee has also appointed Dr. Bryan Maggard and Jeff Tedford to the selection committee. Hunter Yurachek will continue to serve as the selection committee chair for a second consecutive year.
Malzahn’s journey didn’t stop at Auburn. From 2021 to 2024, he took the helm at UCF, ending with a 28-24 record.
Last season, he joined Florida State as the offensive coordinator, where he played a pivotal role in crafting the Seminoles' high-powered offense, ranking third in the conference for scoring. Although he announced his retirement from coaching on February 2, Malzahn isn’t stepping away from football entirely, as his new committee role shows.
Joining him on this journey are former California coach Jeff Tedford and Dr. Bryan Maggard, adding their expertise to the mix. With Hunter Yurachek back as chair, the committee is set to bring a wealth of experience and insight to the playoff selection process.
