Floridas Early Rise Under Jon Sumrall Has Fans Asking One Thing

Discover which five teams have defied expectations in the early weeks of the college football season according to ESPN's Greg McElroy.

Through four weeks, college football has already delivered its usual dose of chaos, and Greg McElroy says the surprises are piling up fast.

On Wednesday, the ESPN analyst laid out his five most surprising teams so far, and the list leans heavily on programs that have jumped out of nowhere. The Big Ten landed two spots with UCLA and Iowa, while the SEC was represented by Mississippi State and Florida. Oklahoma State rounded out McElroy’s top five.

Mississippi State drew strong praise from McElroy after entering the year unranked and starting 4-0. The Bulldogs are also 2-0 in the SEC, and McElroy pointed to the quality of what they’ve done away from home.

“[Mississippi State was] unranked in the preseason poll. They are now 4-0.

They are 2-0 in the SEC,” McElroy recapped. “[The Bulldogs] currently sit in the top four when it comes to strength of record.

You got road wins at Minnesota and South Carolina… they’ve been a tremendous surprise so far this year.”

Florida came in at No. 2 on McElroy’s list, and the Gators have surged into the top eight after getting only a bit of preseason attention. McElroy said the climb has been especially notable because it marks the program’s highest ranking since 2020.

“At No. 2, it’s the Florida Gators. They got a little bit of love in the preseason poll… now, they’re top eight,” McElroy said. “This is their highest ranking since 2020… head coach Jon Sumrall, in year one at Florida, [has] already beaten a top five team by 24 points… the offense has been outstanding.”

McElroy’s No. 1 pick was the one team on the list that is not unbeaten: Oklahoma State. He tied the Cowboys’ placement to how dramatically they flipped their opening two games, from a loss at Tulsa to a win at home against then-No. 6 Oregon.

All five teams McElroy highlighted were included in the Week 5 AP poll.

Kamario Taylor Just Addressed Mississippi State Rumors Before Alabama

Kamario Taylor has spent the last stretch doing what Mississippi State needed most: settling the offense and keeping the focus on football. With the Bulldogs preparing for Alabama, the quarterback has also been answering a different kind of pressure, one that comes with a fast start and immediate outside attention. Tied for the FBS lead in touchdown passes, Taylor has become one of the bigger storylines around Starkville, and not just because of what he has done on the field.

Taylor has publicly brushed aside transfer speculation and made clear he wants to stay with Mississippi State and finish what he started. For a program trying to build momentum while staring down one of the toughest opponents on the schedule, that kind of message matters almost as much as the production. The Bulldogs can use the stability, but with rumors always lingering around productive quarterbacks, the next few weeks will say plenty about how firm that commitment really is. [Read more 🡒]

Mississippi State Finally Gets Its Chance To Prove This Start Is Real

Mississippi States rise has been impossible to ignore, and the Bulldogs have already earned a milestone that had been a long time coming. By beating No. 19 Missouri, they snapped a 12-year drought in ranked-vs.-ranked wins and pushed themselves to No. 16, turning what looked like an encouraging start into something with a little more weight behind it.

Now comes the kind of game that can tell everyone whether this really is a leap forward. Mississippi State heads into an SEC matchup with No. 7 Alabama, a meeting of unbeaten teams that brings even more attention to quarterback Keelon Russell on the Crimson Tide side and Kamario Taylor for the Bulldogs. For Mississippi State, it is a chance to show the Missouri win was more than a good night, and that the ranking reflects something sustainable. [Read more 🡒]

Mississippi State Has A Real Opening In This Alabama Matchup

Mississippi State gets a chance in Week 5 that can change the conversation around the program, at least for a night. Alabama is the bigger name and the heavier favorite, but this matchup has enough moving parts to make it worth a second look, especially in a week built around upset hunting. For the Bulldogs, the appeal is obvious: these are the kinds of games that can shift momentum, raise expectations and give a team a far cleaner national profile if things break right.

The case for an opening comes from the same place most upset arguments do, which is matchup-specific edges and the possibility that the favorite is more vulnerable than its reputation suggests. Alabama still brings the standard weight that comes with a trip to the field, but Mississippi State is being viewed through a lens that suggests this one is not simply a formality. Whether that opportunity turns into something more is the part everyone will be watching, and it is exactly why this game sits near the top of the Week 5 upset conversation. [Read more 🡒]
