Bush Hamdan Heads to Miami Dolphins After Brief Stint at Mississippi State
Bush Hamdan is on the move again-and this time, he's heading back to the NFL. Just over two months after joining Mississippi State’s staff, Hamdan is expected to become the Miami Dolphins’ new quarterbacks coach, according to reports.
Hamdan was brought on by Jeff Lebby’s staff in early December as Mississippi State’s associate head coach for offense and wide receivers coach. It was a notable hire at the time, with Hamdan bringing SEC coordinator experience from his two seasons at Kentucky. But now, the Bulldogs are back in the market for a wide receivers coach, and the clock is ticking with spring practices approaching in March.
This isn't Hamdan’s first NFL stop-he previously served as the Atlanta Falcons’ quarterbacks coach in 2017. Now he’ll be working under newly hired Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley, who’s looking to round out his offensive staff with experienced minds.
As for Mississippi State, the sudden departure leaves a hole in a position group that’s seen some turnover already. Chad Bumphis, who held the role last season, is now at Utah.
The Bulldogs could opt to promote from within, and Desmond Lindsey is a name to watch. Lindsey, hired in late December as the assistant wide receivers coach, has recent experience coaching receivers at UTEP and spent four seasons at Southern Miss.
Despite the coaching shuffle, there’s still a lot to like about Mississippi State’s wide receiver room heading into 2026. The Bulldogs will be without Brenen Thompson, who capped off his college career by setting the program’s single-season receiving yards record. But they bring back key contributors in Anthony Evans III and Ayden Williams, the team’s No. 2 and No. 3 receivers from last season.
They’ve also been active in the transfer portal, adding Missouri’s Marquis Johnson and Oklahoma’s Zion Ragins-both of whom bring speed and big-play potential. And don’t sleep on the young talent. Sanfrisco Magee and Ricky Johnson are two names that have generated buzz as breakout candidates heading into spring.
Losing a coach this close to spring ball is never ideal, especially for a team trying to build continuity under a new head coach. But Mississippi State still has time-and talent-to steady the ship. The next hire will be crucial in keeping the momentum going for a wide receiver group that could quietly be one of the more exciting units in the SEC this year.
