Former Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson is headed to the Colorado Stampede after earning a contract through a showcase tryout, according to the team’s signing announcement.
Robertson will join the franchise as it prepares for its first season in Colorado Springs, with the UFL debut set for spring 2027. The move gives him another shot at the pro level after a brief stint with the Las Vegas Raiders, who signed him as an undrafted free agent and third-string quarterback following the 2026 NFL Draft before later cutting him.
Robertson’s college path took him from Mississippi State to Baylor ahead of the 2023 season. In his first year in Waco, he backed up Blake Shapen and played in six games, finishing with 864 passing yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.
The quarterback room shifted after that season when Shapen transferred to Mississippi State. Baylor then added Toledo transfer Dequan Finn, who opened 2024 as the starter before Robertson stepped in when Finn was injured against Air Force in the third game of the season. Robertson never gave the job back.
Finn has since landed with a UFL team of his own, signing with the Columbus Aviators as a defensive back on Oct. 22.
Once Robertson took over, Baylor turned a 2-4 start into a six-game run to close the regular season. His breakout moment came in a 59-35 win at Texas Tech, where he threw five touchdown passes to kick off the streak.
He finished 2024 with 3,071 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Against LSU in the Texas Bowl, he set a Texas Bowl record with 445 passing yards, though Baylor fell 44-31.
Robertson’s production climbed again in 2025. He threw for 3,681 yards and 31 touchdowns with 12 interceptions, started all 12 games, completed 60.3% of his passes and led the Big 12 with 306.8 passing yards per game. That performance earned him second-team All-Big 12 honors from The Associated Press.
Even with Baylor finishing 5-7, Robertson left Waco ranked fourth in school history in passing yards and touchdown passes. When his college career was done, including the Mississippi State years, he had 7,639 passing yards and 61 touchdowns.
Colorado’s roster build is already taking shape under Rick Neuheisel, who is bringing over players from his 2026 Dallas Renegades team as the franchise relocates to Colorado Springs. The Stampede are also filling out the roster through returning players, showcase participants, free agents and the UFL Draft.
For Robertson, the contract is another chance to get on the field and keep building a résumé that once made him one of the Big 12’s most productive passers.

Mississippi States season has gone from promising to precarious in a hurry, with a 4-0 start giving way to four straight losses and all the familiar questions that tend to follow a slide like this. The Bulldogs have been dealing with a battered roster, too, as injuries have hit key players including quarterbacks Kamario Taylor and AJ Swann, leaving the offense searching for any kind of rhythm while the losses keep piling up.
For Jeff Lebby, the concern is not just the current skid but the way it echoes the broader arc of his tenure, where early momentum has too often been followed by trouble. There is already speculation around whether the program could eventually look in another direction, with potential candidates being discussed in the background, but for now there has been no official move and no clear sign of what comes next.
