Mississippi State wide receiver Anthony Evans III isn’t just off to a hot start - he’s on a pace that could rewrite the Bulldogs’ record book.
The senior came into the 2026 season with a clear target: break Mississippi State’s single-season receiving yards record. Five games in, that goal no longer feels like preseason talk. Evans has already piled up 574 receiving yards, and his 114.8 yards per game puts him on track for roughly 1,492 yards over a 13-game season.
That would cruise past the 1,055 yards needed to top the school mark set by Brenen Thompson last season.
Evans has been central to Mississippi State’s strong start, too. The Bulldogs are 4-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC play, and his production has given the offense a legitimate go-to threat. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound receiver from Converse, Texas, has become one of the most dangerous weapons on the roster.
His numbers stack up with the best in the SEC. Entering Week 7, Evans ranked third in the conference in total receiving yards and first in receiving yards per game.
He also sat third in total receptions and first in receptions per game. On the scoring side, only Missouri’s Donovan Olugbode had more receiving touchdowns than Evans, who has five.
This surge comes after a strong 2025 season following his transfer from Georgia. Evans caught 80 passes for 954 yards and five touchdowns a year ago, setting the table for the kind of senior season he’s delivering now.
The challenge only gets tougher from here. Mississippi State still has a demanding SEC schedule ahead, and the Bulldogs are set to face No.
21 LSU on Oct. 17.
How Evans performs against the next wave of high-level opponents will go a long way toward determining just how far he can push his numbers.
The school record is within reach, but the SEC and national benchmarks remain a bigger climb. DeVonta Smith owns the conference single-season receiving yards record with 1,856 yards from his 2020 Heisman Trophy season at Alabama.
Even so, Evans has already done enough to command attention beyond Starkville. He has passed 100 career receptions and 1,000 career receiving yards during the 2026 season, and through Week 3 he had appeared in 37 career games with 18 starts. His seven career 100-yard receiving games tied him for third in program history.
For Mississippi State, Evans is more than a stat line. He gives the Bulldogs a steady playmaker who can stretch defenses and pop explosive plays. For Evans, the opportunity is simple: keep this pace, and a bold preseason promise could turn into one of the most memorable seasons in recent Mississippi State history.

Former Mississippi State Standout Suddenly Faces NFL Uncertainty
Nineteen former Mississippi State players opened the NFL season on active rosters, a reminder of how much Bulldogs talent is still spread across the league. Dak Prescott has been turning in strong work as a passer, Duane Brown earned a high offensive grade, Cameron Emerson made it back from an Achilles injury to help the New Orleans Saints, and Carlos Simmons has continued producing for the Tennessee Titans.
One of the more unexpected developments came with Robert Sweat, whose place in Chicago suddenly shifted from routine roster note to a much bigger question. The Bears handed the defensive end a suspension that will keep him out for two games, and the situation now adds another layer of uncertainty for a player Mississippi State fans have kept tabs on since his college days. Mississippi State Heads Into LSU With One Huge Kamario Taylor Question
Kamario Taylors availability has become the biggest pregame issue hanging over Mississippi State as it heads to LSU, with the quarterback listed as questionable because of a turf toe injury. Taylor has been working to get himself ready and has been described as day-to-day, but the uncertainty around him has lingered right up to the eve of kickoff.
The injury has been a concern since the end of the Missouri game, and there is still real doubt about whether he can suit up against LSU. Less than 24 hours before the game, Mississippi State is waiting on a decision that could shape how the Bulldogs handle one of their toughest matchups of the season. [Read more 🡒]
Mississippi States Season May Hinge On One Josh Hubbard Question
Josh Hubbard heads into his senior season with the kind of recognition that puts a spotlight on everything Mississippi State does. The Bulldogs standout guard was named preseason first-team All-SEC, and after a roster overhaul, Chris Jans is trying to build a team that does not ask Hubbard to carry every possession the way it often has in the past.
That is where the new pieces come in, even if the fit is still taking shape. Mississippi State added help across the roster, including RJ Johnson and Thomas Bassong, with the goal of finding a more balanced identity and a rotation the staff can trust. For the Bulldogs, the bigger question is not just how productive Hubbard can be again, but how quickly the rest of the roster turns that talent into something steadier and more sustainable.
