Marcus Johansson Named to Sweden’s Olympic Roster After Initial Snub
ST. PAUL, Minn. - It took a little longer than expected, but Marcus Johansson is officially heading to the Olympics.
The Minnesota Wild forward has been named to Sweden’s Olympic roster, stepping in as a replacement following the injury to Leo Carlsson. It’s a well-earned nod for the 35-year-old veteran, who’s been quietly putting together one of his most productive campaigns in recent years.
Johansson joins an already-strong Swedish contingent from Minnesota, including goaltenders Filip Gustavsson and Jesper Wallstedt, as well as center Joel Eriksson Ek. For the Wild, it’s a proud moment - four key players headed to represent their country on the game’s biggest international stage.
And for Johansson, it’s a return to familiar territory. He’s no stranger to wearing Tre Kronor.
He played a key role in Sweden’s silver-medal run at the 2014 Olympics, and he’s been a consistent contributor at the World Championships. Just last year, he posted four goals and four assists in nine games.
The year before? Six goals and six assists in the same span.
When Sweden calls, Johansson shows up - and produces.
Wild head coach John Hynes had voiced his support for Johansson earlier this month, even before the roster spot opened up. “I’m not the decision maker,” Hynes said at the time, “but I think the way that he’s played to date - and he’s played on other Sweden national teams - he’s playing some of his best hockey.
Good for him. I’m hoping he certainly makes it.”
Now he has.
Through 48 games this season, Johansson has tallied 13 goals and 21 assists, good for 34 points. He’s been a steady presence in Minnesota’s top six, bringing veteran savvy, puck control, and a knack for timely scoring. His ability to move between wing positions and play in all situations has made him a valuable asset for the Wild - and now, for Team Sweden.
“It’s an honor to play for your country,” Johansson said.
For a player who’s been in the league over a decade and worn the jersey in some of hockey’s biggest moments, the sentiment still rings true. And for Sweden, they’re getting a player who’s not just experienced - he’s in form. Johansson heads to Italy with momentum and motivation, ready to help his country chase gold.
Sweden’s Olympic roster just got a little deeper. And for Johansson, it’s another chance to shine on the international stage - something he’s done time and time again.
