The Dylan Larkin situation in Detroit keeps getting stranger, and the latest twist has the Red Wings reportedly stunned by the way the trade request became public.
Larkin met with the media on the first day of training camp and didn’t offer much detail about why he asked for a trade. He did make one thing clear, though: he never wanted the request to get out, a comment that appeared to point away from both him and his agent as the source of the leak.
According to Ryan Hana on the Winged Wheel Podcast, the Red Wings were not the ones trying to put the news into the world. As Hana put it: “That got out, I don’t think, from the Detroit side of things. Detroit had absolutely zero interest in getting that out there, and I talked to so many people from the Red Wings side of things who themselves said: We are shocked by this news.”
That reaction makes sense given the mess Detroit is already dealing with. Steve Yzerman is out as GM, Shawn Horcoff is serving as interim manager, and the team still hasn’t settled on who will handle the day-to-day job. Against that backdrop, the Larkin situation is one more major decision hanging over the organization.
If Detroit does move its longtime No. 1 center, the return would have to help right away. That much is clear from the way the Red Wings are approaching the possibility.
Greg Wyshynski of ESPN added his own sharp take on the situation, saying, “I can’t believe Dylan Larkin, star center and captain and Olympian, truly believed that he could request a trade without that sh- eventually leaking to the media.”
For now, though, the trade talks remain stuck. Larkin has five more seasons left on his deal at an $8.7 million annual cap hit, and his no-trade protection gives him plenty of say in where he goes.
Minnesota is widely viewed as his preferred destination, but the Wild still haven’t put forward an offer Detroit likes. They also have their own complication to sort through, with Quinn Hughes still unsigned and potentially in line for more than $20 million per season.
