Wild Suddenly Have A New Lineup Question Before Seattle

Dynamic forward Mason Shaw returns to the NHL stage as the Minnesota Wild faces the Seattle Kraken, bringing his leadership and scoring prowess back to the big league.

The Minnesota Wild brought forward Mason Shaw back from Iowa on Wednesday, with President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Guerin making the move official.

Shaw, 27, has been one of Iowa’s most productive players this season. In nine games with the AHL club, he has nine points, with three goals and six assists, along with 13 penalty minutes and 29 shots on goal.

He leads the team in points, assists, penalty minutes and shots, and is tied for the team lead in goals. Across the AHL, he ranks tied for ninth among forwards in both points and assists.

The 5-foot-10, 186-pound center from Wainwright, Alberta, also wears the captain’s “C” for Iowa. Last season with the Manitoba Moose, he put up 44 points in 71 games, finishing as the team leader in points and assists while serving as captain. That came after a long run in the AHL that has made him one of the more experienced names on the Iowa roster.

Shaw has appeared in 82 career NHL games over parts of three seasons, all with Minnesota, and has 20 points there. His best NHL stretch came in 2022-23, when he set personal highs in games played, points, goals and assists, finishing with 17 points in 59 games. In the minors, he has piled up 211 points and 407 penalty minutes in 349 career AHL games across parts of 10 seasons with Manitoba and Iowa, and he sits sixth on the all-time Iowa Wild points list with 130.

He has also produced in the playoffs, with three goals in 10 career Calder Cup Playoff games across two postseason trips. Internationally, Shaw has represented Canada at multiple events, most recently recording one goal in three games while serving as an alternate captain at the 2025 Spengler Cup.

Minnesota drafted Shaw in the fourth round, No. 97 overall, in 2017, and he wears No. 18 with the Wild. The team is set to play at the Seattle Kraken tonight at 9 p.m. CT on Wild+ and KFAN FM 100.3.

Iowa Wild Let A Home Lead Slip In A Frustrating Finish

The Iowa Wild had every reason to feel in control for much of the night at Casey's Center, getting goals from Charlie Stramel, Justin Kirkland and Rasmus Kumpulainen while keeping the pressure on Manitoba throughout the game. Noah Gregor put the Moose on the board first, but Iowa answered and carried a lead into the final period with a chance to close out a solid home effort.

Instead, the third period turned into the kind of stretch that lingers. Manitoba found a way back into it, and Parker Ford became the difference as the Moose erased the deficit and left Iowa to sort through a frustrating finish after controlling long stretches of play. For a club looking to build momentum, the way this one slipped away will sting just as much as the result. [Read more 🡒]

Wild Face A Quinn Hughes Decision Fans Wont Agree On

The Quinn Hughes conversation around Minnesota has already moved beyond the usual deadline chatter, with Elliotte Friedman and Gord Stellick floating the possibility of the Wild trading him if an extension never materializes. The comparison they drew was a familiar one for NHL watchers, pointing back to Carolinas trade of Mikko Rantanen and the kind of big-swing decision that can reshape a season in a hurry. Dylan Larkin also came up in the discussion as part of the wider roster picture, underscoring how much is tied to any move of this magnitude.

For the Wild, the real issue is how aggressively they want to push their chips in right now. Hughes is open to signing, but he is taking his time, which leaves Minnesota weighing patience against the kind of short-term urgency that can come with a team that thinks it has a legitimate shot. The unresolved question is whether the organization believes this is the year to chase the Stanley Cup at full tilt, because that judgment could ultimately decide how far it goes with Hughes. Wild May Be Closer Than Anyone To Landing Dylan Larkin

The Dylan Larkin speculation has been hanging around the Wild for months, and Minnesota appears to be one of the most aggressive teams in the chase. Since June, the Wild have reportedly made more trade offers to Detroit than anyone else, which keeps them squarely in the center of a market that has also included interest from the Devils and Capitals. Montreal is still lurking too, but only if Larkin broadens the list of places he would consider.

Larkins representatives would prefer to get something done sooner rather than later, but the Red Wings still have not accepted a deal. That leaves the Wild in a familiar spot for a contender trying to add a proven forward, close enough to the action to keep the conversation alive, but still waiting on Detroit to decide whether the right offer has finally arrived.
