Wild Still Facing A Roster Squeeze Around Jared Spurgeon

The Minnesota Wild navigate key injuries as they adjust their roster, including recalling new talent, to maintain momentum in the face of challenges.

The Minnesota Wild made a pair of insurance moves Sunday afternoon, recalling forward Hunter Haight and defenseman Carson Lambos from Iowa while placing captain Jared Spurgeon on injured reserve.

The timing came just about four hours before puck drop against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and it came with Minnesota already dealing with more than one major injury situation. The Wild entered the night at 5-2-1 after Thursday’s win over the Blues, but the status of Kirill Kaprizov was still up in the air after he was knocked out of that game by Joel Hofer’s illegal hit.

Spurgeon’s move to IR, though, doesn’t appear to signal a new problem. The 36-year-old defenseman had already returned to practice Friday, skating with Jonas Brodin, but head coach John Hynes said then that Spurgeon wasn’t ready for the Columbus game. According to Michael Russo of The Athletic, the IR designation is retroactive, which would make Spurgeon eligible to return as early as Tuesday in Edmonton, his hometown.

Spurgeon had played six games before the injury and produced one goal and four assists with a plus-4 rating. He was logging 22:22 of ice time per game, second among Wild defensemen only to Quinn Hughes at 26:44.

Minnesota’s blue line is still stretched thin. Brock Faber remains out after taking a puck to the head, and Olli Maatta did not practice Friday, according to Joe Smith of The Athletic. With Spurgeon unavailable Tuesday in Winnipeg, David Spacek filled his place on the second power-play unit.

Haight, 22, has been productive for Iowa early this season, leading the club with three goals and adding two assists in six games. Minnesota selected him in the second round, 47th overall, of the 2022 NHL Draft, and he already has nine NHL games on his resume from last season, when he posted one goal and one assist.

Lambos, 23, has a goal and an assist in six games with Iowa and is second on the team with 15 shots. This is his second recall in four days. The Wild brought him up Thursday as extra depth, but he did not play and was sent back to Iowa on Friday.

Lambos was Minnesota’s first-round pick in 2021, taken 26th overall, and his lone NHL appearance came at Columbus on Dec. 18, 2025, when he played 10:16.

Wild Make Another Roster Move After Key Injury Absence

The Wilds roster shuffle continued with a pair of recalls from Iowa, bringing up forward Hunter Haight and defenseman Carson Lambos as Minnesota adjusts to the latest disruption on the blue line and up front. The moves come with the club still trying to keep its depth intact while navigating an injury situation that has forced the front office to tap further into the organization.

Jared Spurgeon landing on Injured Reserve is the latest reminder of how quickly the picture can change for Minnesota, especially with a veteran defenseman out of the mix. Down in the minors, the ripple effect reached the Iowa Wild too, as they brought in defenseman Reilly Webb from the Jacksonville Icemen, another sign of how the organization is trying to stay covered at every level. Wild Blue Line Suddenly Faces A Bigger Jared Spurgeon Concern

Jared Spurgeons latest absence has pushed the Wilds blue line into a more unsettled spot, with general manager Bill Guerin moving the captain to injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 12. The move formalizes what has already been a recent concern for Minnesota, as Spurgeon has been out with an upper-body injury while still producing one goal and four assists early in the season.

Minnesota responded by recalling defensemen Carson Lambos and Hunter Haight from the Iowa Wild, a sign that the team needed additional bodies on the back end while Spurgeon remains unavailable. For a group that leans heavily on its captain's steadiness and experience, the timing makes the injury feel a little more significant, even if the club is still waiting for a clearer sense of the longer-term picture. Injury-Hit Wild Are Putting Daemon Hunt In A Defining Spot

With injuries thinning the blue line, Daemon Hunt has suddenly become a bigger part of the Wilds picture than he might have expected when the organization brought him back off waivers. The defenseman, originally drafted by Minnesota before being traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets in November 2024, has been asked to shoulder more responsibility as the Wild patch together their back end, including extra penalty-killing work and a heavier workload overall.

For Hunt, the timing is meaningful because he is still trying to establish himself as a regular NHL player. The increased role has given Minnesota a closer look at his development, and it has also put him in the kind of minutes that can accelerate a young defensemans growth if he handles them well. In a season shaped by injuries, the Wild may end up learning a lot about what Hunt can become. [Read more 🡒]
