The Minnesota Wild are settling one of their biggest behind-the-scenes questions before the season even gets rolling: John Hynes is sticking around.
The team announced Tuesday that it has signed the head coach to a multi-year contract extension, ending months of speculation that had pointed toward a new deal being close. The news came after The Athletic’s Michael Russo reported earlier in the week that the extension was nearly finished.
Hynes’ future had looked far less complicated than some of the other issues hovering around the Wild this offseason. While talk around the roster has included the still-missing Dylan Larkin trade and the lack of playmaking depth behind Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy, the organization apparently never wavered on the coach behind the bench. Early in the offseason, Bill Guerin quickly shut down any talk of a possible coaching change.
That belief in Hynes now comes with a fresh contract.
Hynes has been in charge for parts of three seasons after taking over 19 games into the 2023-24 campaign. He enters his fourth year in St. Paul with a 125-79-23 record, along with the franchise’s only second-round playoff appearance in more than a decade.
Before arriving in Minnesota, Hynes spent parts of four seasons as head coach in Nashville from 2019 to 2022. He also served as the head coach in New Jersey from 2015 to 2020.
The postseason results, though, have not matched the regular-season record. Hynes owns an 11-25 mark in six career playoff appearances, and that history adds another layer to the pressure he’ll face moving forward.
Even with the extension in place, the hockey questions around the Wild haven’t gone away. Minnesota arrived in St.
Paul at TRIA Rink for the start of 2026 training camp with Matt Boldy and Quinn Hughes among the players present after their trip to the NHL Media Tour in Las Vegas last week. Hughes still does not have a contract extension, and the roster still looks thin in the areas that matter most.
So while the Wild have locked in their coach, the bigger challenge may still be finding enough firepower for the top six. If that doesn’t change, Hynes could be headed into one of the toughest seasons of his 13-year head coaching career.
