The New York Islanders are making another adjustment to the puzzle as they try to find the right mix in a lineup that’s been battered by injuries.
Peter DeBoer is still without three key forwards - Mathew Barzal, Calum Ritchie and Matias Maccelli - and defenseman Alexander Romanov, who went down with an ACL injury in the third game of the season. With so much of the roster unavailable, DeBoer has been forced to keep reshuffling, and the changes have been constant from night to night.
That was especially true against the Nashville Predators, when he went with an unusual 11 forwards and seven defensemen. The Islanders came away with a shootout win after a 3-3 game, but that setup won’t carry over. According to Andrew Gross of Newsday on X, the Islanders are returning to a more standard 12 forwards and six defensemen against the Minnesota Wild.
DeBoer said Kyle MacLean is back in as the 12th forward and Scott Mayfield is in as the sixth defenseman. Matthew Kessel, who had dressed in seven straight games, will come out as a healthy scratch.
MacLean is expected to slide back onto the fourth line as the left wing with Casey Cizikas in the middle and Mitchell Chaffee on the right side. DeBoer has not been using his lines in a classic, fixed way, instead mixing and matching depending on who is skating well on a given night, but that trio is set to open the game together.
The forward groups otherwise stay intact. Simon Holmstrom remains on the top line with Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri. Emil Heineman, Brayden Schenn and Victor Eklund form the second line, while Ondrej Palat, JG Pageau and Anthony Duclair make up the third.
On the blue line, Matthew Schaefer is still carrying a massive load. He made history by becoming the first known player to stay on the ice for an entire five-minute overtime, and that was also the longest shift in franchise history.
Logan Stanley continues to skate with him on the first pairing. Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock are together on the second pair, with Mayfield expected to join Tony DeAngelo on the third.
DeBoer needs the second and third pairings to give him more than they have lately, because Schaefer and Stanley can’t keep soaking up that kind of ice time every night. Schaefer logged a career-high 32:16 against the Predators, while Stanley was over 20 minutes again.
In goal, Ilya Sorokin gets the start. He’ll be looking to respond after a rough outing against the Dallas Stars, when the Islanders lost 6-3 following a disastrous third period.

Leafs Trade Talk Just Took A More Serious Turn
The trade market around the league is starting to move from speculation to something much more real, and Minnesota has at least one name worth monitoring. While the Wild are weighing what to do next with Quinn Hughes and the ripple effects of his uncertain contract situation, the broader picture has become more fluid, with Toronto insisting no player is fully off limits and Vancouver exploring changes that could put more veterans in play.
The most striking development is in Detroit, where the captains status has added urgency to conversations that were already heating up. For Minnesota, that matters because the club is always watching for a chance to address its blue line or make a bigger swing if the right deal opens up, and the latest chatter suggests the market may be headed toward exactly that kind of moment. Senators Roster Shift Just Got More Complicated At The Worst Time
The Wild added another defensive piece to the organizational mix by claiming Cameron Crotty off waivers from Ottawa, a move that came as the Senators were trying to navigate a roster shuffle of their own. Ottawa had put Crotty on waivers Wednesday, and Minnesota stepped in to grab the blueliner as the Senators continue to sort through the ripple effects of a changing lineup.
For Ottawa, the timing is hardly ideal. Warren Foegele is headed to the sidelines for an extended stretch after a knee-on-knee hit against Vegas, while the club is also preparing to welcome Thomas Chabot back into the lineup against the Los Angeles Kings and finally get its full defensive group together. Even with that good news, the loss of Foegele leaves another hole to manage, and it underscores how quickly one roster move can complicate the next. [Read more 🡒]
Wild Add Familiar Blue Line Depth At A Telling Time
The Wild added a little more familiarity to their blue line by claiming defenseman Cameron Crotty off waivers from the Senators, a move that gives them another depth option at a time when every healthy defenseman matters. Crotty had appeared in three games for Ottawa this season before landing on waivers, and Minnesota already knows him from a previous stop in the organization.
Crotty is back for a second stint with the Wild after first signing with the club in July 2024 and getting into one NHL game in Minnesota. It is the kind of transaction that often gets overlooked outside the roster churn, but for a team managing the margins on defense, bringing in someone who has already been through the building can carry a little extra value.
