The Minnesota Wild have been waiting all summer for the Detroit Red Wings to sort out their front office, and that delay has already complicated any talk of a Dylan Larkin deal. Now there’s a new name in the mix that could make things even messier: former Wild executive Andrew Thomas.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on his 32 Thoughts podcast on Tuesday that Thomas could be under consideration for Detroit’s general manager opening after Steve Yzerman was reassigned.
“When this opened up, I don’t know that [Thomas] is going to be ready for this now, but I’ve heard they think very highly of him,” Friedman said during his 32 Thoughts podcast that was released on Tuesday. “And so that is a name to remember, although, I”m not convinced the opportunity is going to be him now.”
Thomas spent four years with the Wild as the lead hockey researcher from 2016 to 2019, playing a major role in the organization’s day-to-day work. His responsibilities went well beyond spreadsheets.
He helped build the team’s advanced data collection and player performance modeling infrastructure, and he also handled statistical analysis for personnel decisions involving trade targets, free agents and the draft. He also worked on contract negotiations and advised the coaching staff on tactical changes.
His background fits the modern front office mold. Thomas co-founded the analytics site WAR on Ice, and after his Minnesota run ended when Paul Fenton replaced Chuck Fletcher in 2019, he became the first Director of Data Science at SportsMEDIA Technologies in 2020.
He is now the Vice President of Baseball Analytics for MLB’s Detroit Tigers, the same organization that employs another Red Wings GM candidate, Jeff Greenberg. Greenberg is currently the Tigers’ GM and previously served as Associate General Manager for the Chicago Blackhawks from April 2022 to September 2023. Because Thomas is working under Greenberg now, there’s at least a possibility Greenberg could try to bring him along if he lands the Red Wings job.
That matters for Minnesota because any new Detroit front office could reshape the Larkin situation. Friedman said he believes Larkin’s trade request will still be in place once the Red Wings settle on their next GM, but he also noted that the team may try to persuade him to stay.
“I think the biggest thing is that I think the Red Wings have been shocked and surprised at getting people to want to play for them or be there and I think that’s a very big part of this,” Friedman continued. “Explain to us how we can get back to being the Red Wings again where people want to play for us.
“I think [the trade request] stands for now. …We’ll see what the new person comes in and says and how Larkin feels.”
For the Wild, that leaves a thin path forward. The Red Wings’ new leadership could make a fresh push to keep Larkin, especially if it wants to move away from the old-school approach Yzerman was known for. Thomas’s analytics background could be part of that shift, and that might matter to a player who asked out.
But Thomas could just as easily make a trade tougher. If his models value Larkin differently, Minnesota could find itself back at square one. And if the new Detroit regime decides to put the whole situation behind it quickly, the door could swing back open for the Wild.
For now, though, the bigger point is simple: the Wild have spent the summer waiting on Detroit, and a GM search that still isn’t settled means a Larkin trade is nowhere close. If Thomas ends up in the Red Wings’ front office in any capacity, it adds yet another twist to a process that has already dragged on far too long.
