Utah Mammoth Stuns Wild as Lawson Crouse Scores Twice

Crouse shines with two goals as the Utah Mammoth halt the Minnesota Wild's winning streak in a commanding 5-2 victory.

In a thrilling showdown at Delta Center, the Utah Mammoth halted the Minnesota Wild's impressive six-game winning streak with a commanding 5-2 victory. Lawson Crouse was the star of the night, netting two goals to propel the Mammoth to their third win in four games.

Clayton Keller showcased his playmaking prowess with a goal and two assists, while Nick Schmaltz, Jack McBain, and Mikhail Sergachev each contributed two assists to fuel the Mammoth's offensive machine. Karel Vejmelka was solid between the pipes, making 21 saves to keep the Wild at bay.

Mammoth coach Andre Tourigny praised the relentless effort of the top line, featuring Crouse, Keller, and Schmaltz. "They're hungry, they want to go at it, and they stay on top of their opponent," Tourigny remarked, highlighting Keller’s goal that stemmed from intense pressure on one of the league's elite defensemen.

For the Wild, Matt Boldy extended his point streak to eight games with a goal and an assist, while Kirill Kaprizov also found the back of the net. Despite their recent hot streak, the Wild struggled to contain Utah's transition game, a point emphasized by coach John Hynes. "We just fed their transition and their offense," Hynes noted, pointing out the game’s turning point after the initial 12 minutes.

The action kicked off with Cooley’s short-handed goal, threading the puck through Jesper Wallstedt's legs after a slick pass from McBain. Keller doubled the lead early in the second period, capitalizing on Schmaltz’s tenacity along the boards.

Crouse's forehand-backhand finish in the slot, courtesy of Keller’s setup, extended the Mammoth’s lead to 3-0. Although Dylan Guenther appeared to add another, a successful offside challenge by Minnesota nullified the goal.

Kaprizov’s power-play tally gave the Wild a glimmer of hope, but Barrett Hayton's rebound goal early in the third period reestablished Utah’s dominance. Crouse sealed the victory with his second goal, a deft redirection from Sean Durzi’s pass.

Despite Boldy’s late goal from a Vladimir Tarasenko assist, the Wild couldn’t overcome the deficit. Mats Zuccarello acknowledged the Mammoth’s formidable play, noting their consistent challenges over the years.

The game wasn’t without its physical toll, as Minnesota’s Joel Eriksson Ek exited in the second period after a high stick from Schmaltz. His status remains uncertain, leaving a potential gap in the Wild’s lineup.

This performance by the Mammoth not only snapped the Wild's streak but also sent a message across the league: Utah is a team that’s finding its stride at a crucial point in the season.
