In Des Moines, the Ontario Reign showcased their resilience with a late surge to secure a 3-1 victory over the Iowa Wild at Casey’s Center on Saturday night.
The game started with Iowa taking the initiative. They jumped to a 1-0 lead just 8:35 into the first period, capitalizing on a power play. Dylan Gambrell orchestrated the play, sending the puck through the slot to Ben Jones, who delivered a shot-pass that Gerry Mayhew deftly deflected past Ontario's Pheonix Copley, who was solid with 26 saves on the night.
Despite being outshot 12-8 in the opening period, the Reign didn't back down. Nikita Alexandrov leveled the score at 14:40 in the second period, finding the back of the net with a slick forehand finish on the power play against Iowa’s William Rousseau, who recorded 22 saves.
By the end of two periods, Iowa had a slight edge in shots, leading 23-18, but Ontario's persistence was about to pay off. Martin Chromiak seized a loose puck and skillfully tucked it inside the post at 15:43 of the third period, giving the Reign a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Andre Lee sealed the deal with an empty-netter, just 37 seconds from the final buzzer, wrapping up the scoring and ensuring Ontario's triumph.
In the end, Iowa outshot Ontario 27-25. The Wild managed to convert 1 out of 5 power-play opportunities, while the Reign were more efficient, scoring on 1 of their 2 chances.
