Mats Zuccarello Stuns Blackhawks With Dramatic Overtime Winner for Wild Victory

Mats Zuccarello's overtime heroics secured a thrilling 4-3 victory for the Minnesota Wild over the Chicago Blackhawks, as they continued their dominant streak.

In a thrilling overtime showdown at the United Center, Mats Zuccarello lifted the Minnesota Wild to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Zuccarello sealed the deal with a pinpoint wrist shot from the top of the slot, fed perfectly by Marcus Johansson.

“It’s always nice to get a win,” Zuccarello shared. "We've been playing solid hockey, but victories haven't always come easy.

We had a strong first and second period, but let up a bit in the third. These two points are crucial for us to regain momentum and confidence.”

The Blackhawks fought back with Frank Nazar tying the game at 3-3 late in the third period. He capitalized on a slick backhand pass from Connor Bedard, slipping the puck past Filip Gustavsson.

Johansson had a standout performance with a goal and two assists, while Brock Faber chipped in with three assists for Minnesota, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Gustavsson stopped 21 of 24 shots, briefly leaving the game due to an equipment issue before returning to close out the win.

“A gear issue took longer than expected, so I had to step out,” Gustavsson explained. “I got it sorted and was eager to get back in.”

For the Blackhawks, Nazar and Louis Crevier each tallied a goal and an assist, while Bedard added two assists. Spencer Knight was solid in goal with 33 saves.

“I liked our response in the latter half of the game,” said Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill. “We struggled early with puck battles, which slowed us down, but we found our rhythm as the game progressed.”

Ryan Hartman opened the scoring for the Wild, finishing a quick sequence involving Faber and Kirill Kaprizov. Johansson doubled the lead shortly after, snapping a 15-game goalless streak with a fortuitous bounce.

Crevier cut the deficit for Chicago with a powerful slap shot, and Vladimir Tarasenko restored Minnesota’s two-goal cushion on the power play, courtesy of another Johansson assist.

Ryan Greene kept Chicago in the hunt, tapping in a loose puck during a chaotic scramble in front of the net.

The night also featured a heartfelt tribute to former Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno, now with Minnesota, highlighting his impact on the team and its young players.

“It was a classy move by the Blackhawks and well-deserved for Nick,” said Wild coach John Hynes.

Minnesota’s dominance over Chicago extends to an impressive 18-0-1 streak since 2020. The Wild were without Joel Eriksson Ek due to a lower-body injury, while the Blackhawks gave defenseman Ethan Del Mastro some ice time, scratching Matt Grzelcyk.

The two teams will clash again in Minnesota on Thursday, promising another exciting chapter in this competitive series.
