Charlie Stramel Suddenly Has Wild Fans Watching One Huge Decision

Minnesota Wild's top prospect Charlie Stramel is on the brink of full recovery, but a potential trade looms as the team's priorities shift to immediate victories.

The Minnesota Wild’s top prospect is getting close to full strength, and Charlie Stramel says he’s nearly there after the broken ankle that ended his season at Michigan State in late March.

Stramel told reporters on Monday, as Minnesota opened development camp, that he’s already back on the ice and expects to be at 100 percent within the next couple weeks. He also said he isn’t paying attention to the trade chatter surrounding him, with his attention fixed on trying to earn a spot with the Wild in camp.

The 21-year-old’s stock rose sharply after a huge senior season in East Lansing. He scored 19 goals and finished with 44 points for the Spartans, a dramatic jump from the 17 goals and 47 points he had combined over his previous three collegiate seasons between Wisconsin and Michigan State.

That breakout year had him on the radar as a possible postseason addition at the end of last season, but the ankle injury wiped out that idea and pushed Minnesota to sign him to a futures deal while his rehab got underway.

Stramel’s climb has been reflected in the prospect rankings, too. Scott Wheeler of The Athletic had him at No. 37 last spring, and he’s now listed as the league’s No. 21 prospect. That leap came after a season that made him look like one of the Wild’s most intriguing young players.

For now, though, his name still keeps surfacing in trade conversations, with Stramel often mentioned as the key piece heading out in any deal Bill Guerin might make for another star, including Dylan Larkin. Even with that noise around him, Stramel’s recovery appears to be moving in the right direction, and he’s close to being fully ready again.

Wild Just Made A Familiar Minnesota Hockey Move With Bigger Stakes

The organization kept the hire in the family, turning to a coach with deep Minnesota ties to lead its AHL affiliate. Bill Guerin and Iowa Wild general manager Matt Hendricks are backing the move, a reminder that the Wild still value continuity in Des Moines as much as they do in St. Paul, especially when it comes to developing players who are supposed to be ready for the next step.

Stu Bickel brings a coaching path that has already run through the AHL for five seasons, along with stops at the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Magicians. He also knows the pro side of the state well from his own playing career, including time in the Wild system, and the larger question now is how hell translate that familiarity into results with a roster that matters more than ever to Minnesotas depth chart. Bill Guerin Just Made Wild Fans Sweat About Quinn Hughes

Quinn Hughes is suddenly one of the summers most closely watched names for the Wild, with the defenseman eligible for a new contract as he heads into the final season of his current deal. Bill Guerin has tried to calm the temperature a bit, making clear that a fresh agreement does not have to land the moment the calendar flips to July, even if the expectation inside the organization is that something gets done before camp.

For Minnesota, the timing matters almost as much as the deal itself. The Wild are juggling a broader roster picture at the same time, from possible free-agent additions and draft picks to an active pursuit of Dylan Larkin, but Hughes looms as the storyline fans will track most closely. Guerins message leaves room for a little patience, yet it also sets a point when the situation would start to feel a lot more uneasy if nothing is in place. [Read more 🡒]
