Vikings Undefeated Start Is Already Putting One Big Decision Under Pressure

Michael Irvin urges the Minnesota Vikings to make a bold quarterback switch to sustain their impressive start amid an underperforming offense.

The Minnesota Vikings are still unbeaten, but Michael Irvin thinks their 6-0 start is hiding a problem that could catch up with them fast.

After Minnesota edged the Indianapolis Colts 16-10 on Sunday, the Vikings remained the NFL’s only undefeated team. The defense has carried plenty of the load, allowing just 12 points per game. But Irvin, speaking as an ESPN analyst, argued that the team needs to make a bold offensive shift if it wants that success to last.

He pointed to a lineup change centered on the passing game and, in his view, on getting the ball to "the greatest wide receiver in the National Football League right now, which is Justin Jefferson."

"I believe if you make that switch and go to a Carson Wentz, then the passing game becomes the primary for the Minnesota Vikings, and you can push past scoring 18, 20 points a game and get up in the realm with scoring 25 points a game, 30 points a game, because Justin Jefferson is that kind of a wide receiver," Irvin said.

Irvin doubled down on that point with an even sharper comparison.

"Four receptions for 44 yards yesterday? Come on, man. ...

That's like having Ferrari-like talent that you're not even using that you just leave in the driveway. You need to take this out of the driveway, put it on the highway, and give the football to Carson Wentz, and watch this Ferrari run you through a playoff and get you possibly to a Super Bowl with that defense," Irvin said on ESPN's "First Take."

The Vikings’ offseason move at quarterback was a major one, signing former Arizona Cardinals No. 1 pick Kyler Murray to a one-year deal. Murray has appeared in five games, throwing for 812 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

But Wentz gave Irvin’s argument some fuel in Week 1, when Murray was sidelined against the Green Bay Packers. In that 39-22 win, Wentz threw for 133 yards and three touchdowns.

Jefferson led the way that day with eight catches for 92 yards and two scores. Since then, though, his production has mostly leveled off, and Minnesota’s offense hasn’t topped 23 points in a game since that opener with Wentz running the show.

For now, Murray has done enough to keep the Vikings winning. Still, it’s been the defense doing the heavy lifting.

That balance will be tested again when Minnesota goes on the road to face the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Nov. 1.

Vikings Just Claimed The NFL Spot Every Contender Wants

After seven weeks, the Vikings are the last undefeated team standing, which is exactly the kind of early-season position every contender wants but almost nobody gets to keep for long. In a league built to flatten the standings quickly, Minnesota has separated itself from the pack while a handful of other teams around the NFL are already dealing with the usual October churn.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Chargers remain stuck as the leagues only winless team, even with a bye week giving them time to regroup. Injuries and uneven play have kept that situation from changing, and the broader picture around the AFC only adds to the contrast, with Tennessee sliding to 1-6 and frustration beginning to show on the sideline. For Minnesota, the bigger question now is how long this kind of clean slate can last. [Read more 🡒]

Vikings Face A Familiar Problem As NFLs Last Unbeaten Team

After Week 7, the Vikings are the NFLs lone unbeaten team at 6-0, a familiar spot for a franchise that has been here before. Other previously perfect teams took losses, leaving Minnesota alone at the top of the league standings and setting up the kind of midseason attention that comes with carrying the last undefeated mark.

History gives the Vikings plenty to think about, because they have been the leagues final unbeaten team seven times and the results have been all over the map. Some of those runs ended with Super Bowl trips, others fizzled out, and the larger trend around the league since 2016 has been encouraging enough to keep the focus on the next step rather than the record itself. Vikings Unbeaten Run Is Hiding A Justin Jefferson Concern

Minnesotas 6-0 start has been built on a defense that has looked sharp under Brian Flores, giving the Vikings enough week-to-week stability to keep rolling while the offense settles in around it. Even with the unbeaten record, there is a quiet layer to the conversation around Justin Jefferson, whose production has been solid but not quite in the usual stratosphere for one of the leagues premier receivers.

Through five games, Jefferson has 23 catches for 302 yards and three touchdowns, and his involvement has become a more interesting subplot than anyone in Minnesota would prefer during a perfect start. As the Vikings get ready for Detroit in Week 8, how often the ball finds Jefferson figures to matter just as much as the matchup itself, especially if Minnesota wants its offense to match the pace of its record.
