The Minnesota Vikings got a mostly clean injury week ahead of their Week 3 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but one familiar name has popped up late on the report.
Linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. was downgraded to questionable Saturday afternoon because of a non-injury related personal matter. The team said he did not travel with the Vikings.
“LB Ivan Pace Jr. (Not Injury Related - Personal) did not travel with the team and his game status is now questionable.”
Pace is no longer a starter in Minnesota’s front seven the way he was for much of his first two seasons, but he’s still a meaningful piece of the defense and special teams. The former Cincinnati standout entered the league as an undrafted free agent and has played in 47 NFL games across four seasons, with 27 starts. Twenty-one of those starts came in his first two years.
This season, Pace has appeared in both of the Vikings’ first two games. He’s logged 24 defensive snaps, which is 17 percent, and 44 special teams snaps, good for 85 percent. Against Chicago last week, he played 14 defensive snaps.
He has six tackles on the year, including one for loss. Even if his defensive role has shrunk, Minnesota would feel his absence on special teams if he can’t go.
And he has still made his presence felt on defense at times. One of the biggest examples came last week against Chicago, when he helped set up DeAndre Swift’s goal-line fumble that flipped the game.
Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray is set to return, and Aaron Jones has also been cleared for full participation. Outside of Jordan Mason, who remains on injured reserve for three more weeks, the only other key absence for Minnesota is punter Brett Thorson, who is out with a hamstring injury and will be replaced by Johnny Hekker for at least one week.

Any trade talk would have to run through Kevin OConnells view of McCarthys future, and that is where the real debate starts. OConnell has shown interest in developing him, which makes an in-season deal feel complicated even before you get to the value question, but recent quarterback trades suggest McCarthy would not command a massive haul, perhaps landing somewhere in the range of a fourth- or sixth-round pick. The Vikings brought Dillon Bell up to the 53-man roster last week, giving him a shot after Jauan Jennings absence created another opening on the depth chart. Bells limited role so far has been confined to special teams, but the move still hinted at a team looking for any way to spark a passing game that has been sputtering.
Bell flashed in the preseason, and Minnesota has not been shy about searching for answers as the offense tries to find more consistency through the air. Vikings Are Running Out Of Flexibility With Kyle Van Noy
The Vikings keep leaning on Kyle Van Noy as a short-term answer at edge, elevating him from the practice squad for a third time to help round out the pass-rush rotation for an upcoming game. Minnesota also made a separate roster move by signing punter Johnny Hekker to the 53-man roster and placing center Nick Samac on injured reserve, which created the opening needed to make the transaction work.
Van Noys status remains the bigger roster puzzle because this call-up only buys the Vikings one more game before he has to go back to the practice squad unless the team makes room for him permanently.
